Session 60 - Ghouls (recap)

In this session, our party entered the Mere, destroyed some Ghouls, created a magic ring, and reached the Carnath Roadhouse

Traveling North

  • The session ended with the party starting North, having dealt with the Cult caravan, hoping for safe travels…
    • (Pliny Survival 23)
    • (Aegar Survival 5)
    • (Pliny Survival 25)
  • The party spent 4 more days traveling relatively uneventfully to the Mere of Dead Men.

Scrying on Rezmir

  • On the second day out from the caravan fight, Zoyana cast Scry on Rezmir, leveraging
    • Her familiarity and relationship with Rezmir
    • The letter that she found in the Fox Traveler Outfitters, that Zoyana thought was Rezmir’s writing.
  • Zoyana’s view opened into a room with stone walls. Books and manuscripts lined wooden shelves constructed from salvaged lumber.
  • In the room, were Rezmir, a high-elf, and a handful of cultists sorting books.
    • Some of the looks books looked quite valuable.
    • The high-elf with long blond hair was dressed in fine leather armor, wearing a purple cloak, and sporting an eyepatch. Zoyana could tell at a glance that he was snooty.
  • Rezmir was talking with the elf:
    • “Yes, you can keep them here. Study them. Revel in them. Learn from them.”
    • “As long as they make it to her arrival, you can keep them for a time.”
    • “The ring is hers too you know.” She flashed an evil smile. “Yes, I know about that too. It is fine. We all shepherd value for her,” as she reached up and touched the insignia around her neck.
  • Zoyana (Perception 25) noticed a ring on the elf’s hand, a thick gold band with a band of black in the center, adorned with an image of a white flaming skull.
  • Looking around as much as she could, Zoyana could get a sense of the surrounding rooms.
    • The room with the cultists appeared to be the main (if small) library area.
    • There were some stairs down, but Zoyana was not able to see down.
    • In the room with the stairs, there were some boxes of books that either hadn’t been opened up yet or maybe were prepped to go back
    • The other was a reading room with a small table and a couple of chairs.
  • Zoyana tried to read the names of as many books as she could (Perception 22):
    • An old musty tome of Carnivorous Gardening
    • The Great Extra Planar Hoax
    • Samwell’s Guide to Wands
    • Prayers for the Righteous
    • The Dark Sermons of Strongor Bonebinder
    • The Biological Survey of People
    • Fabled Communities of Monsters
    • Many more old books without titles on the spines or covers. Many fancy. Mostly appearing to be nonfiction, but some fiction too.
    • Zoyana gathered that these were books pulled from the stash coming through, and picked out specifically because they’re good quality.
      • The books in box out in the hallway appeared not nearly as good as the average quality of the books already on the shelves.
  • When the spell ended, Zoyana informed the party, and asked if anyone knew any of the books.
    • Aegar (History 10), did not particularly recognize any.

Continuing North

The Greater Protection of Waterdeep

  • As the party headed north on the High Road, they passed few groups, but are still within the greater protection of Waterdeep before the Mere.
    • As a general rule, they rode with Zoyana in the lead, followed by Pliny then Aegar.
    • Each night, they tried to find some place off the beaten path, but within shouting distance of the road, trying to remain inconspicuous.
  • They rode along the road through temperate forest. The road wasn’t the best road, but at one point it had been.
  • And within that greater protection of Waterdeep, they felt safe from the things that go bump in the night.

Camp Talk

  • In camp, the topic turned to finding the Carnath Roadhouse and plans:
    • Aegar: “I think the roadhouse should be fairly obvious. We know it to be a checkpoint into the Mere of Dead Men. And we know thereabouts where we are looking.”
    • Aegar: “And once we get there, what’s our story? Is our goal to to to murder everyone in our path, or are we going to use subterfuge? What is our plan?”
    • Pliny: “I know Zoyana had some pretty big demands last time. And we agreed we’d honor them.”
    • Aegar: Zoyana? Have your… goals tempered somewhat? Or are we on the warpath?”
    • Zoyana: “I want Rezmir. And the people who killed my family. And I want them dead.”
    • Aegar: “On that we can agree.”
    • Zoyana: “And anyone who stands in my way, that is my path.”
    • Aegar: “Our path might be more difficult…” He started talking with his hands, “When I was a general, we had to focus. When when we were leading troops, we had to focus on our goal. And sometimes giving up a battle meant winning the war. If our path is Rezmir and defeating Rezmir, then the small things do not matter. The guards that we come across are merely obstacles to those goals.”
    • Aegar: “I would argue for spending less time on them. If we get into a battle every single time, we might alert Rezmir to our presence. It might be more difficult to get to her. We might not have the opportunity that we would, if we practice some restraint. I agree with you. I am not trying to keep you from the people who murdered your family. I think vengeance is necessary. Justice is necessary. But I think that if we go into battle every single time, we end up losing.”
    • Pliny: “And we’re no better than them.”
    • Zoyana: “I don’t care about being better than them. I care about them dying. But I trust you Aegar. That you will help me get this. So if that’s the route that you say, then I will follow you.”
    • Aegar: “I agree, my purpose is to take down the Cult’s plan and ending Rezmir is a part of that. But we need to get there in order to understand what it is they are doing. We still do not know that.”
    • Aegar: “So we must get through the Roadhouse and find this Castle.”
    • Aegar: “If we can spy on the Roadhouse to see whether we have a way in, or whether we can pass unannounced, then let us try that.”
    • Aegar: “If we have to battle our way through, then we can do that as well. But I think it pays to snoop around a little bit there. Try to figure out any information on the Castle that they have and on what they are doing, so that we can plan our way forward.”
    • Zoyana and Pliny nodded along.
    • Aegar: “We in agreement.”
    • Aegar: “All right, and, as we said, Rezmir is yours.”
    • Pliny: _“And I’ll keep my eye out I traveled this way before. I played shows along the way, and I think I think I know where the Roadhouse might be.”
    • Aegar: “I think, once we get into the Mere, I will not be willing to risk a point of exhaustion in the night. And so I can cast one spell into your ring at that point, if we are still not completed.”
    • Aegar: “I don’t mind taking the first watch tonight.”

The Mere of Dead Men

  • The following day, as they traveled up the High Road, it started to get gloomy.
    • Throughout the day, they passed sections where the swamp already ate into the road.
  • Something clicked for Pliny (History 22), and he realized that they had entered the Mere of Dead Men, and memories of stories read and lectures forgotten came flooding to mind:
    • (In elvish, the place was known as the “Slow Marching Court”, “Merdelain”).
    • The name referred to the thousands of dwarves, elves, and humans of the Fallen Kingdom who were slain during an invasion of an orc army.
    • It was about 100 miles long by 30 miles wide from the shore to the deepest point.
    • lots of monsters. Lots of bad things. And the swamp is constantly growing over time.
    • Of note:
      • The horde attacked in 614 DR, creating the Mere. (It’s 1489 right now.)
      • The last stand was at Iniarv’s Tower
      • The Kingdom of Uthtower had been split into two when twin brothers ascended the thrones: the kingdoms of Yarlith and Uthtower.
      • A black dragon laid claim to the mere ~630 DR, and became the dracolich Ebondeath at the behest of Strongor Bonebinder, a priest of Myrkel and member of the Cult of the Dragon.
  • As they moved along, they could see why a road crew was needed (nice of the party to deprive them of supplies).
  • Starting about noon, they reached the point where the Mere was ever-present.
    • Gloomy with a fetid, often sour smell.
    • When the wind blew, it carried with it a bit of fog and a cold humidity.

First camp in the Mere

  • The party found themselves a nice campsite on a small hill that was lined enough with trees and dense bushes that they had some protection from those along the road. (Zoyana Survival 20).
  • Pliny realized that this would be a good time to cast Tiny Hut.
    • A mobile dome of force sprang into existence around the party, allowing them to see out into the night.
    • From outside, the dome was opaque, allowing no sight to examine those inside.
  • The party, feeling safe, provided their full range of spells to charge Pliny’s ring.

Slogging through the Mere

  • The party awoke the next day to a light drizzle and a foul sulfur smell.
  • They slugged their way through the Mere, trying to keep to the road. For the most part they were able to walk through without any obstacles or things in their way.

Scrying Again

  • That evening, Zoyana again Scryed on Rezmir.
  • Zoyana’s view opened to the same grey stone walls. The same not-very-well-tended floors. + She was in a Chapel.
    • It was a small Chapel, but clearly a Chapel.
  • The high-elf was there with Rezmir, they were talking again:
    • “The lizard folk would be more useful.”
  • Rezmir had been been adjusting a bust of Tiamat. She pulled her hand back from the black dragon head, and it wobbled into place. In her raspy voice she replied, Dralmorrer, you tried teaching metallurgy… How’d that go?”
  • Dralmorrer, the high-elf, just grumbled.
  • Zoyana looked around:
    • There was the handsome wooden statue of the Dragon Queen
      • The woodsmithing was surprisingly good, given that this was clearly is a new addition, though most of Tiamat’s heads looked a bit more lizard-folky than they did dragon.
    • Along the South wall, the adjoining room appeared to be an Archer’s Gallery. Arrow slits lined the opposite wall. In case of an attack, archers could man it.
      • If somebody came in and attacked the castle, Zoyana was facing the side where the defenders’ archers would stand and shoot into the space on the other side of the wall.
    • There was a storeroom to the west.
    • Also to the west appeared to be a rectory, with windows open to the outside.
      • From out the windows, Zoyana could tell that they were on the ground floor of the castle.
    • The doorway to the East opened into an inner yard, with hard-packed earth that was slathered in mud and turned over in places.
  • During her 10 minutes of viewing, Zoyana saw a humanoid frog hop across the yard, carrying a spear. It looked like it might have been doing some guarding.
    • Upon discussion, the party realized that this was a bullywug.

Second camp in the Mere

  • Zoyana (Survival 21) once again found a protected camp site.
  • The party discussed Zoyana’s Scrying a bit:
    • Aegar: “It would be advantageous of us to not attack this castle head on. They obviously had defenses. It would not take too long before they dispatched us.”
    • Zoyana: “But it sounded like that training of people was not going particularly well.”
    • Aegar: “Not well. They said that lizard people were not working. Maybe they will try the bulldogs next? Whatever is happening, they are training for something.”
    • Zoyana: “yeah.”
    • Aegar: “We should tread carefully.”
  • That night, the party did their usual thing:
    • The ritual casting of Tiny Hut
    • The party charged Pliny’s Ring.
    • Aegar sent Parnatha to do loops around the camp, guarding the area (Perception 4, Passive 11)

A Ghoul

  • The first seven hours of their rest passed uneventfully.
  • The sky had just started to lighten, but night was still in force.
  • The first anyone noticed, there was a thump against the side of the Hut.
    • There was a creature, very obviously a ghoul, pounding against the side of the Hut.
  • The party discussed quickly, and decided to finish their rest with the monster circling the hut.
    • Aegar: “What do you guys think?”
    • Zoyana: “Well, I think that I want my strength. I’m tired guys.” And she immediately started snoring.
    • Aegar chose to not test the magic too much: he chose to rest, but not to return to sleep. : “let’s let’s test it oh.”

Ghoul Attack

  • Shortly before the Hut expired, Parthana was attacked.
  • From outside, Pliny heard the cracking of branches and twigs, and what he could only describe as a bush screaming. Then the others heard too as a Shambling Mound separated from the bushes.
  • A long fight ensued. More ghouls doing extra stuff. The party won.

Loot

  • The party looted the bodies
  • Aegar shaved the shambing mound bare, so there was nothing there.
  • One of the ghasts was wearing a thick gold chain with a diamond pendant (350 gp)
  • One of the ghouls was wearing a silver ring (15 gp)
  • The head ghoul (actually a maurezhi) was carrying a Rope of Climbing

Third camp in the Mere

  • That night, the party found another safe camp and did their usual thing:
    • The ritual casting of Tiny Hut
    • The party charged Pliny’s Ring.
      • Pliny charged it 2 level 4 spells
      • Aegar charged it with 1 level 2 spell.
      • Zoyana charged it with 1 level 4 spell.
      • Fang had nothing left.
    • Aegar sent Parnatha to do loops around the camp, guarding the area (Perception 4, Passive 11)

Travel

  • The next two days passed uneventfully.
  • Each day, they slogged through the Mere, exposed to its sounds and smells, its cold and fetid wind, and mucky, swampy travel.
  • Each night, the party found another safe camp and did their usual thing:
    • The ritual casting of Tiny Hut
    • The party charged Pliny’s Ring.
      • Pliny charged it 1 level 5 spell and 1 level 4 spell
      • Aegar charged it with 2 level 2 spells.
      • Zoyana charged it with 2 level 4 spells.
      • Fang charged it with 2 level 3 spells.
    • Aegar sent Parnatha to do loops around the camp, guarding the area (Perception 4, Passive 11)

The Ring

  • After weeks of charging his ring, after the crafting, forging, and enchantment, this night was different.
  • The magical energy, which had been reforming and reshaping and folding in on itself, formed magical lines that joined together.
  • With the final casting of the last spell, the whole ring started to glow and shine and pulse.
    • In and out…
    • In and out…
  • The magic circled the ring, and circled.
  • Until a beautiful bright flashed off of the precious purple gem.
  • Pliny knew: It was done.
  • Pliny placed it on his finger and felt the magical attunement:
  • Amelioration: While you wear this item, you stabilize whenever you are dying at the start of your turn.
    • While stabilized, you still make death saves. You get 3 tries to roll a success. Any success heals you for 1 hp. This effect can be used once per day, resetting at dawn.
    • In addition, whenever you roll a Hit Die or dice for a healing spell to regain hit points, double the number of hit points provided by the dice.
    • Pliny gets knocked down. Immediately stabilized. Pops up next round. Or the next. Or the next. Or not as normal
    • “Won’t you just fucking die?!?!?”
  • Lust:
    • Heart: This object pulsates at regular intervals like a beating heart. The rate of beating increases when its bearer successfully charms a creature or if they become charmed or frightened.
    • Seduction: As an action, speak the command word (“Sengvenn”) and choose one creature that you can see within 5 feet of you. If the target can see or hear you, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your Charisma-based spell save DC or be charmed by you.
      • On a failure, the target believes they are in love with you and cannot attack you. While this effect lasts, if the target is still within 5 feet of you when you are targeted by a melee or a ranged attack, the target interposes itself (as a reaction) and becomes the target of the attack instead. If the target takes damage from any source, the effect of this power ends.
      • On a success, the target is aware of your deception and can make an immediate opportunity attack against you. This effect can be used only once and resets at dawn.
    • On subsequent turns, you can use your action to maintain this effect, extending its duration until the end of your next turn. However, the effect ends if you move more than 5 feet away from the creature, if the creature can neither see nor hear you, or if the creature takes damage.
  • Of the Phoenix: When you drop to 0 hp but aren’t killed outright, you can choose to regain 10 hit points and deal 10 fire damage to all creatures in a 10 foot radius of yourself. The item then permanently loses this property.

The Carnath Roadhouse

  • The following day proceeded as uneventfully as the prior two as they headed North.
  • About dusk, before they found their campsite, they rounded a bend and saw a large roadhouse situated on a long patch of flat ground.
    • The ground was flat, but it was rutted from all the wagon traffic, and they could see a group of work wagons.
    • One was being taken into the compound, and two of them were being pulled out empty.
  • The session ended, taking in the sight…

Loot

  • 4 gp from Aegar to the innkeeper
  • Loot from Ghouls:
    • A thick gold chain with a diamond pendant (350 gp)
    • A silver ring (15 gp)
    • A Rope of Climbing
