Session 59 - Waterdeep & Beyond (recap)

In this session, our party finished in Waterdeep, joined the Cult Caravan, and eliminated the Cult caravan

The House of the Moon - Part 2 (cont’d)

Previously

  • The High Priestess instructed Zoyana to drink another draft and lay down in the pool.
    • The High Priestess handed her a cup that contained a dark, swirling liquid.
  • Zoyana fiddled with her my vial of river water and then drank.
    • It was almost tasteless, with a slight metallic feel.
  • As she drank, she felt her body sink. The High Priestess guided Zoyana to sit down into the pool and then lay back.
    • Zoyana felt herself floating, her body perfectly buoyant with the water.
  • Zoyana heard the High Priestess start to chant behind her, and the need to sleep came over her. Zoyana’s eyes closed.

Zoyana had a dream

This Session

  • Pliny and Aegar had watched as Zoyana had laid down and closed her eyes and the priestess sat in a lounge chair by the pool and drink her own draft, laid down, and fell asleep.
  • Time passed.
  • The acolytes watched over the pair with a benign neglect, and left Pliny and Aegar to their own devices.

Inspring Zoyana

  • After a while, Pliny heard an echo in his mind of Zoyana saying, that she needed some inspiration.
  • Pliny: “You got it, and I’m not gonna pee on you.”
    • Aegar turned to Pliny “Thank you. But, why…, why did you say that?”
    • Pliny: “Oh, I…”
    • Aegar: “I mean, I appreciate it, but that was quite a non sequitur.”
    • Pliny: “Sorry, I thought I heard something.”

Zoyana Wakes

  • A few more minutes passed, and then they woke up.
  • The High Priestess rose from her chair, looked down at Zoyana and said, “I’m sorry that I could not do more.”
  • High Priestess: “That magic is strong, you need to be careful.”
  • Zoyana, as she got up and walked out, “No, I need to fucking kill people.”
  • Aegar followed.
  • Pliny: Aegar, I’m going to stay behind you, at all times.” And he followed.
  • Behind them, the party heard the High Priestess: “Let them go.”

Zoyana Fucks Off

  • Aegar caught up to Zoyana: “I trust that did not go the way you wanted it to.”
  • Zoyana turned into a Giant Eagle and flew away.
  • Aegar: “I think this is her way of telling us she would like some time by herself.”
  • Pliny: “Spread your wings girl soar.”
  • Aegar: “She’ll return to us in time Pliny. Why don’t we go eat.”
  • Pliny: “Sounds good. Let’s go.”

Joining the Caravan North

Leaving a message

  • Aegar and Pliny waited for Zoyana to return until about three o’clock in the afternoon.
  • Not wanting Zoyana to think that they left, Aegar told the innkeeper that, “a short halfling woman comes in looking for us, tell her that we went to our meeting and we’ll return shortly,” before sliding a gold piece across the bar.
    • The innkeeper accepted with bug eyed thanks.
    • Aegar: “Is that not enough? I apologize.” and he slide over three more.
    • The innkeeper accepted each gold piece with a separate thanks, _“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

The Warehouse

  • Aegar and Pliny ended up at the warehouse where they had arranged to check in with the Cultists.
  • (Charisma checks of 11 (thanks to bardic inspiration) and dirty 20 did not result in noticeable effects)
  • When they entered the warehouse, there was a big hustle and bustle.
  • In the middle of the planning and prepping, Enom saw them and waved them over.
  • Pliny took the lead in the conversation (Persuasion 23) and they seemed very happy to have Pliny and Aegar joining.
  • In so far as they could tell, the cultists did not connect anything missing with the party, and the topic of missing items didn’t even come up.
  • After a couple of hours of schmoozing and friendliness (in a quiet moment, some dice were surely busted out), they ended up with a plan to meet back at the warehouse the next morning having singed on as guards, along with their group in this caravan.
    • Pliny: “Beautiful, looking forward to it.”
    • Aegar: “pleasure, gentlemen, we look forward to traveling with you once more.”
    • Pliny: “And remember, you can always get cheese and silks.”
    • Aegar: “They are quite delicious.”

Zoyana went hunting (or did something anyway)

Waiting for Zoyana

  • Pliny and Aegar returned to the inn, but Zoyana had not returned.
    • She did not return that night.
    • Nor the next morning.
  • Aegar: “It looks like she has not yet returned.”
  • Pliny: “You think we need to wait? She knows how to find us. Is Leosin still in town?”
  • Aegar: “As far as I know, yes I believe he was staying here.”

Charging Pliny’s Ring

  • That night, both Pliny and Aegar charged Pliny’s ring with magical energy.
    • Aegar spent 40 minutes charging it with 2 level 2 spells, and taking a point of Exhaustion.
    • Pliny spent 90 minutes charging it with 1 level 5 spell and 1 level 4 spell, and taking a point of Exhaustion.
    • Fang spent 60 minutes charging it with 2 level 3 spells, and taking a point of Exhaustion.
    • Both Luters recovered from the levels of Exhaustion on the night’s rest.

Chatting with Leosin

  • The next morning, Pliny and Aegar caught up with Leosin.
  • Whatever it was that they were going to say, Leosin started with, “I am sorry that I was riled up last night… I meant everything I said, but I definitely did not mean it the way that I said it. And whatever you guys need to do to figure out the plan, I think you have the information you need. Wait. Where’s the other one?”
  • Aegar: “That is why we are here, actually. She… had some business to attend to, and it seems that we are going to be moving on soon. We wanted to tell you about our plan so that, should she return, you can inform her.”
  • Aegar: “We are heading up with a caravan to the Roadhouse and on again to Castle Naertar.”
  • Aegar: “We hope that she will join us. We need her.”
  • Aegar: “Please, please tell her that. Tell her that we need her.”
  • Pliny: “And if you don’t get to her, please use your channels to let her know.”
  • Leosin looked concerned, “I will… I’ll put out feelers. We’ll find her.”
  • After a moment, Leosin continued, “I must say… Good luck.”
  • Aegar: “Thank you. Will we see you again?”
  • Leosin: “Most definitely. If you come looking for me and can’t find me, you can certainly leave a message here. Or send one through.”
  • Pliny: “Thank you.”
  • Aegar: “Well met Leosin. We will see you on the other side.”

Planning

  • Outside, Aegar pulled Pliny aside: Pliny, do we move on without her?”
  • Pliny: “I think we have to, right?”
  • Aegar: “I believe we do. We don’t have much time, in order to stop the Cult. I just… I just wish she had confided in us. I wish we could be there for her to help her.”
  • Pliny: “I felt that the whole way through, man. She’ll come when she’s ready.”
  • Aegar: “You are right. You are right. When she is ready, she will be able to find us, right?”
  • Pliny: “I hope so.”

On the Road North

  • Pliny and Aegar joined up with Enom and were assigned guard duty.
  • The hours turned to days along the High Road.
  • Aegar spent his time trying to get a sense of the normal caravan talk, and get a sense of how much they know and how much they were willing to share. But not at the risk of exposing themselves. (Investigation 0, Persuasion 21)
  • Pliny laid lower than last time and focused on hearing what he could around the caravan and working on crafting his ring (every day, he dispensed 9 levels worth of spells and took a nightly level of exhaustion; Aegar did the same. (Investigation 4, Persuasion 18)
  • They heard lots of caravan talk, and occasionally Tiamat was mentioned. And some stuff about dragons.
  • Aegar became convinced that somewhere among this group was the leadership of the Cult.
  • Pliny was convinced that everyone in the caravan didn’t know shit
  • Aegar: Pliny, I am telling you these are our guys. We need to do something about them.”
  • Pliny: Aegar. Aegar. They don’t know their heads from their asses.”
  • Aegar: Pliny, all of the signs are there. They were talking about Tiamat, dragons, looking for dragons.”
  • By the end of the fourth day, the two heroes got the members of the caravan talking and were acknowledged members of the crew.
    • But whatever they were laying down, Aegar and Pliny were not picking up.

Zoyana rejoins

  • By day 5, Zoyana had completed her pouting and caught up to the caravan.
    • During her pouting, she had put on the ring they discovered in the fanny pack of holding from the troll. After attunement, she discovered it was a Ring of Fire Resistance
  • She wildshaped into a swallow and flew over and shat toward Pliny’s head.
    • Pliny dodged the poop. (Poop Attack 10 vs Dex Save 18)
  • Pliny: Aegar! A bird just shit and it missed me. I’ve never once seen a bird shit and miss. I think that’s Zoyana.”
  • Aegar: Pliny, it is a bird. Perhaps it just didn’t see you there. Birds care not for the affairs of men.”

Swallowing

  • Zoyana the swallow hitched a ride with the caravan all day.
  • Pliny and Aegar did their normal routine at camp, and returned to their tent after some mild carousing.
  • When they returned, Zoyana was in the tent.
  • Aegar: Zoyana, where have you been?”
  • Zoyana: “It’s time for you to tell us Aegar. It’s time for you to tell us things.”
  • Aegar: “Tell you what?”
  • Zoyana: “About your dream, who was that man in your dream? We saw him when we were walking in that dreamscape. Who is that man?”
  • Aegar: “I believe he is Ilmater.”
  • Zoyana: “Who’s that?”
  • Aegar: “He is… the God that I worship.”
  • Zoyana: “The one with the little dragon on his shoulder, that guy?”
  • Aegar: “The with the dragon on his shoulder?”
  • Zoyana: “Mmm hmm. That burden you to a crisp. Is… your patron?”
  • Aegar: “No, I what? What are you talking about?”
  • Aegar, now understanding who she was talking about, though not knowing who he was: “How do you know..”
  • Zoyana: “He cursed me and murdered my family. Who was that elven woman with the Blue Dragonborn.”
  • Aegar: “I don’t know the woman.”
  • Zoyana: “Who are the dragonborn? Because see, the thing is that Pliny, he’s been an open book. And I’m an open book. But you’re holding back. On things that affect us.”
  • Aegar: _“I don’t know them personally, but I know that they are guards of House Thanax.”
  • Zoyana: “What the fuck is that?”
  • Aegar: “It is my Clan. My mother is the Viscountess of House Thanax. She is third in line for the throne.”
  • Zoyana: “So you’re basically royalty.”
  • Aegar: “I am. Very far down on the line of succession. My brothers and sisters, and their children have claims far before I am so royalty is a bit of a misnomer but…”
  • Zoyana: “Why was that guy in your dream?”
  • Aegar: Zoyana, I have never lied to you. I do not know who he is.”
  • Aegar: “I have only seen the silver haired lady once, and that was on the day that I left home.”
  • Zoyana: “Who was it? Who is it?”
  • Aegar: “She was standing next to my mother.”
  • Aegar: “I arrived home after a battle and they held a celebration in my honor. I was given the honor of… executing an enemy of the state. And she was there.”
  • Aegar: “But I don’t know who she is.”
  • Zoyana: “We have to find out who she is.”
  • Pliny: “Do you execute the person?”
  • Aegar: “I did.”
  • Pliny: “I bet that was hard for you Aegar.”
  • Aegar was silent.
  • Zoyana: “We’re at the point where we’re not holding back anymore. If you have a dream that we need to know about, if I have a flashback that you need to know about. Or I’m fucking out.”
  • Pliny: “I don’t like when you shit on me.”
  • Zoyana: “You too Pliny.”
  • Pliny: “I know. I finally said my piece. I feel better now, thank you. It sucked to bottle that up.”
  • Zoyana: “Because all of this is connected, and we are all connected if you guys haven’t figured that out yet. That guy was in your dream. That crazy elf lady took us on my dreamscape. We were brought together for some reason. Pliny, what do you know that we don’t know? What are you holding back on.”
  • Pliny: “I don’t think I’m gonna make it as a musician.”
  • Aegar: “That’s… been apparent for a very long time.”
  • Zoyana: “We need to figure out what’s what the fuck is going on. Who these people are, and then we need to kill them. And Aegar, you need to let me call them. We’re past the point of converting them.”
  • Aegar: “I agree.”
  • Zoyana: “If they’re part of the Cult, we take them out. But Rezmir is mine.”
  • Aegar: “This is all this is all very cryptic. In the spirit of of coming clean, what happened? You just left, and you come back needing the truth and we don’t… I am more than willing to talk to you and to tell you. But I don’t know what happened or why.”
  • Zoyana: “They cursed me. They cursed me so that I killed my family. I killed my clan. I killed my town. And the last thing that I will remember hearing for the rest of my life is their screams. Because of something that I did. That they made me do. But that I did.”
  • Aegar: Rezmir did this?”
  • Zoyana: “Mmm hmm, and that guy from your dream. And two or three other people that I think are women but that I couldn’t see.”
  • Zoyana: “I need Rezmir. It’s the only way that I’ll really know what happened is to find Rezmir. But we can’t kill her. Yet.”
  • Zoyana then laid out her story as she remembered it:
    • Zoyana was up on a hill because she was going to play a prank on her family.
    • And Rezmir, that guy from your dream, Aegar, and three other people that I wasn’t able to like access who they were, but I think are women, were there.
    • They cursed her into being part of some sort of ritual.
    • There was a ritual circle or something and Zoyana had to cut her hand with a knife.
    • And drop her blood into a bowl with some azure liquid and then poured the purple mixture down a well that was at the center of the ritual thing.
      • Zoyana spilled part of it when she went to tip the bowl down the hole, and part of it went on on Zoyana’s dress and part of it went on Rezmir’s foot.
      • It didn’t hurt, but when Rezmir and tried to touch Zoyana to steady her, purple sparks flew between them.”_
      • So the potion must have made some kind of connection, she thought.
    • And when the potion went down the well, the purple fog came out and encircled the town, and screaming.
    • All Zoyana heard was screaming.
    • And then Zoyana didn’t know what happened.
  • Aegar: “So how is that connected to the silver haired woman? How is it connected to…”
    • Zoyana: “We don’t know.”
  • Aegar: “And we don’t know who the the dude in the turban is?”
  • Zoyana: “No, but he was there when I cut my hand and poured the potion down the well.”
  • Aegar: “And that is the only other time that we’ve seen him other than my dream?”
  • Zoyana: “Yeah. And we have only seen the silver haired elven lady when Pliny saw her at the Fox Traveler Outfitters and when you saw her with your mother, Aegar?”
  • Pliny: “Right.”
  • Aegar took the opportunity to fill the others in on his full backstory:
    • Burning through the wood elf encampment and being prized for it.
    • That he was known as the Sword of Thanax, the Force Scorcher.
    • Being converted by Isadrill, a priest of Ilmater
    • After executing Isadrill, he left and has been running from his family ever since.
  • Aegar: “And if my family is back here, I can only assume it means that they are chasing. I don’t think my my mother is a… She was a harsh woman and she would not be forgiving.”
  • Aegar shared about the dreams of dragons.
  • Pliny had nothing worthwhile to share, but somehow kept trying to share a shit ton of things.

Reconnecting with Fang

  • Fang came over and snuggled Zoyana from behind, “Hey hey hey.”
  • Zoyana: “I’m sorry that I left you buddy.”
  • Fang: “I was worried. Where’d you go?”
  • Zoyana: “I just needed to eat and kill some things so that I could feel better.”
  • Fang: “Oh… Don’t… don’t leave me again.”
  • Zoyana: “I won’t. I’ll take you with me next time, okay?”
  • Fang: “No, no next time. We have to stay with farfaces.”
  • Zoyana: Fang, do you feel like being an assassin with me and going on a killing adventure?”
  • Fang: “Oh! Fang is sneaky.”
  • Zoyana: Fang, you can be sneaky.”
  • Fang turned invisible, “Not even Aegar’s as sneaky.”
  • Zoyana: Aegar is definitely not sneaky.”

Planning

  • Zoyana: “So my thought is that we might as well start picking these mother fuckers off before we even get where we’re going, since nobody even knows that I’m here.”
  • Aegar: “We have been following this caravan and honestly Zoyana, I don’t think that these are our guys. I think these guys are just… periphery.”
  • Zoyana: “Are they part of the Cult?”
  • Aegar: Pliny thought that they were that the head guys for a while, but I did not believe so.”
  • Zoyana: “As a part of the Cult?”
  • Aegar: “I think they are.”
  • Pliny: “By by association, not by anything else. One guy mentioned Tiamop. That guy has no fucking idea, that jackass.”
  • Zoyana: “They want to be evil is what we’re saying. Are they gonna fight for us, or against us? When push comes to shove, are they gonna fight for us, are they going to fight against us, or are they going to leave us the fuck alone?”
  • Aegar: “Give me one chance Zoyana, and if it doesn’t work out, then we’ll do what needs to be done.”
  • Zoyana: “One.”
  • Pliny: “Each?”
  • Zoyana: “No”
  • Pliny: “Just in case…” and he cast Motivational Speech, amping the party for either possibility.

Converting the fools

  • After gathering bardic inspiration from Pliny, Aegar set off to convert the Cultists.
  • Aegar walked into the center of the caravan and started preaching.
    • He told them that he had been paying attention to what they’ve been talking about.
    • He told them that he knew things about the Cult and that they are not good people
    • He told them that it’s not too late to turn away from the Cult,
      • And that the party could provide them with contacts, so that they can keep their business.
  • A couple of words into Aegar’s spiel, Larion Keenblade (one of the guards of the Cult wagons on the trip to Waterdeep) caught his eye and pulled him aside to stop him, “What are you doing?”
    • Aegar: “I am trying to save these men’s lives.”
    • Larion: “So you’re going to tell them to stop being part of the Cult that they’re in, and you think that the thing they’ll do is turn around and say ‘Eh!’, instead of like… killing you?”
    • Aegar: “I think that is possible, yes.”
    • Larion: “I mean don’t get me wrong, I don’t exactly love it here. But if you do that thing then, a little bit more tact, my friend. What are you trying to do?”
    • Aegar: “I am trying to save these men’s lives. Because if they do not turn now, we will kill them.”
    • Larion: “You’re… you’re going to what?”
    • Aegar: “I am going to kill them. You have this one chance, my friend, to get out of my way. To turn back and go to Waterdeep. Because the only thing that is left on this road is dead men.”
    • Larion: “I mean, I was already going t be done with this when I got back to Waterdeep. Like I’m gonna disappear and be done with them.”
    • Aegar: “I suggest you go to Waterdeep right now.”
    • Larion: “But… half of these guys, they’re just signed on for the trip.”
    • Aegar: “So then, half of them can leave now.”
    • Larion raised his hands and started backing away, “Well, then I’m not going to be here for this.”
  • As Larion turned to run, Aegar turned and returned to the crowd, preaching as an Emissary of Peace.
    • He leveraged all of his talents and abilities, channeling divinity (with a 25 Persuasion).
  • Aegar’s magically induced sermon separated the wheat from the chaff.
    • Most of those in the caravan, the wagon drivers, hired guards, and other regular folks and early cultists scattered, being convinced or shaken by Aegar’s words and wanting no part or whatever was going to come next. (“No amount of pay is worth this shit.”)
    • Enom Tobun, went from a Cult apologist to recognizing the error of his ways: “No, I don’t need to be part of the Cult. I, I agree, there has been some shady shit. And I don’t need to be part of it.”
    • But there were a healthy handful of real Cult fanatics among the caravan.

Eliminating the chaff

  • The five cultists who remained drew weapons and charged.
    • One spewed acid on Aegar while a second missed.
  • Aegar
    • Cast Shield of Faith on himself, then
    • Took a deep breath and breathed his Lightening Breath across 4 of the cultists, killing one, and then
    • Seeing that some survived, took another breath and unleashed his Lightening Breath singing the remaining 3 again.
  • A cultist bashed Aegar with his greatsword (17 hp slashing damage)
  • Zoyana encircled all 4 of the remaining cultists in a Wall of Fire (25 hp fire damage), with Aegar on the other, non-damaging, side.
    • 1 cultist lit on fire and screamed incredibly loudly, and all were scorched badly.
  • Fang
    • Cast Healing Word on Aegar (doing 6 points of healing),
    • And then yelled, “Don’t touch Farface!” while casting Vicious Mockery, mentally pummeling a cultist (with 6 hp psychic damage).
  • Pliny yelled, Aegar, hit him!” (providing bardic inspiration), followed with his trusty Dissonant Whispers on the cultist nearest Aegar (fail, 8 hp psychic damage)
    • The cultist went running, while trying to parry Aegar. Aegar was having none of it, and plunged his sword into the cultist’s neck, down into his armor, and kebabed him.
  • A cultist attempted to spew acid on Pliny while running from the Wall of Fire.
    • Pliny attempted, and failed, to Counterspell.
    • Aegar cast Shield Other (raising Pliny’s AC by 5)
    • The ball of acid splashed harmlessly against Aegar’s Shield.
  • Another cultist followed along, running and attempting to spew acid on Pliny, this time missing entirely.
  • Aegar climbed a hill and ran around the Wall of Fire to get in front of Pliny, and then took a moment to gather a Second Wind.
  • Zoyana kept her concentration on the Wall of Fire and tried to Produce Flame on a cultist, but missed.
  • Fang cast Shatter, shaking two of the cultists.
  • The party heard screaming from the others side of the cultists.
  • Pliny pulled and shot an arrow from his longbow into a cultist, then bardically inspired Zoyana.
  • A cultist flew across the pond and took an unsuccessful swing at Pliny.
  • His cultist friend continued to follow, flying over the pond and (this time) successfully stabbed Pliny.
  • Aegar
    • Stepped over to the cultist who looked most damaged and eliminated her with a smite-infused attack (Nat 20, 44 hp damage). She burst with radiant energy from the inside (splatting Pliny and Aegar. And then
    • Took another step over and sliced the final cultist (13 hp slashing damage).
  • Zoyana wildshaped into a Giant Scorpion and grabbed the cultist then stung him, splitting in two with the claw, then decapitating him with her stinger. Pliny was again splattered by dead-cultist.
  • In the silence that followed, the Looting Luters caught their breath.

Cleanup

  • The party spared little time clearing the wagons from the road and pulling them out of sight.
  • None of the previous caravan members were in sight, but they weren’t far off.
  • Zoyana and the others searched the carts. Among the 6 wagons, there were 12 crates of treasure interspersed among the many crates containing supplies for road construction: cobblestones, gravel, tools, and assorted materials.
  • Zoyana cast Detect Magic and got hits on a few magic items, which were the only things anyone in the party collected from the Cult wagons.
    • An Everbright Lantern
    • A Kythrian Manchineel Wand
    • A Mabaran Obsidian Orb
    • Clothes of Mending
  • From notes found within the wagons, Zoyana was able to gather the general location of the Carnath Roadhouse (around the ‘r’ in ‘Mere of the Dead Men’) on the Sword Coast map.
  • The party then gathered those from the caravan that they could find and provided them “ownership” of the wagons: effectively paying them off with the spoils from the treasure crates.
    • And told them them to start at Waterdeep and go do good in the world.

Traveling North

  • The session ended with the party starting North, hoping for safe travels…
    • (Pliny Survival 23)
    • (Aegar Survival 5)
    • (Pliny Survival 25)
  • The party spent 4 more days traveling relatively uneventfully to the Mere of Dead Men.

Loot

  • 4 gp from Aegar to the innkeeper
  • Ring of Fire Resistance (ring from the fanny pack of holding from the troll, identified)
  • From the Cult wagons:
    • An Everbright Lantern
      • Wondrous item, common
      • This bullseye lantern contains an Eberron dragonshard that sheds light comparable to that produced by a Continual Flame spell. An everbright lantern sheds light in a 120-foot cone; the closest 60 feet is bright light, and the farthest 60 feet is dim light.
    • A Kythrian Manchineel Wand (Imbued Wood Focus, Acid or poison) kept by Zoyana
      • Wondrous item, common (requires attunement)
      • This imbued wood focus is a rod, staff, or wand cut from a tree infused with extraplanar energy. If you’re a spellcaster, you can use this orb as a spellcasting focus.
      • When you cast a damage-dealing spell using this item as your spellcasting focus, you gain a +1 bonus to one damage roll of the spell, provided the damage is Acid or Poison. T
    • A Mabaran Obsidian Orb (Orb of Shielding, Necrotic)
      • Wondrous item, common (requires attunement)
      • An orb of shielding is a polished, spherical chunk of crystal or stone aligned to one of the planes of existence. If you’re a spellcaster, you can use this orb as a spellcasting focus.
      • If you’re holding the orb when you take Necrotic damage, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1d4 (to a minimum of 0).
    • Clothes of Mending
      • Wondrous item, common
      • This elegant outfit of traveler’s clothes magically mends itself to counteract daily wear and tear. Pieces of the outfit that are destroyed can’t be repaired in this way.
