Session 58 - Waterdeep (recap)

In this session, our party explored Waterdeep

Caravan - Day 64: Waterdeep

Previously

  • The party made it to Waterdeep.
  • Waterdeep was a bustling city.
    • Where Baldurs Gate was cosmopolitan in an old, established, European way, Waterdeep is a bit more New York with the style and energy of both up-and-coming and being rebuilt.
  • The session started with wants:
    • Zoyana wanted to go visit a church.
    • Aegar wanted to do some shopping.
    • Pliny wanted to follow up on Leosin’s note to check in at the Boulder’s Lament in the Trade Ward of Waterdeep.

Saying goodbye to Senator Timothy Dexter

  • Once inside the gates, Senator Timothy Dexter led them to his warehouse in the Dock Ward where he had prepared to take his supplies.
  • Senator Timothy Dexter thanked them very much for their time, and followed with several characteristically ridiculous things, including:
    • When he heard Pliny talking about Widow Swift and his response was, “Pity me that I’ve been in hell 15 years in this world, with the gost. A woman I married. My wife.”
      • Pliny: “Let me know if you ever need me to make a visit so.”
      • Senator Timothy Dexter: “I will do that Sir, I will do that.”
      • Aegar: “I do not understand. Can you not… if you… do not like this one… find another one?”
      • DM: “Oh. Of course. That I’ve done. Good day, Aegar.”
    • Aegar turned to Zoyana: “Am I missing something? If he is so unhappy, why does he remain?”
      • Zoyana: “Oh, Aegar, don’t worry about.”
      • Aegar: “This. I feel.”
      • Zoyana: “These humans it’s what they do. They make each other miserable, but then do nothing to fix their circumstances.”
      • Aegar: “Very odd. They must enjoy their suffering.”
      • Zoyana: “They do, I think. You might have much to learn from them, Aegar, about suffering.”
      • Aegar: “Perhaps, but I suffer with a purpose. There seems to be no purpose here.”
      • Pliny: “You what with a porpoise?”
  • Pliny and the Senator exchanged backflips for the road:
    • Senator Timothy Dexter flipped a surprisingly agile backflip (Acrobatics 17), and Pliny bettered him (Acrobatis 19).
    • The laughed, they smiled, they gave each other manly, effervescent hugs.
  • Senator Timothy Dexter then provided them their pay:
    • “Something for you all. It was 10 gold at tenday, and it has been six. But for your trouble, let’s make it 100 gold pieces even.”
      • Aegar: “Very generous”
      • Pliny: “Thank you.”
  • Senator Timothy Dexter: “And next time, I hope you invest.”
  • Aegar: “I hope that we will meet again, somewhere along the road.”

An Inn and a tavern

  • The party found an inn before splitting up to their personal tasks, and reconvening for dinner.
    • Pliny to talk to Leosin.
    • Aegar to do his shopping.
    • Zoyana to the House of the Moon.
  • They had previously discussed three options:
    • Killing the cultists on the road before reaching Waterdeep (that option had clearly closed.)
    • Take up Enom’s open invitation to sign onto the next leg of their trip.
      • Which would be leaving the second day from this, so one day off before they were going to ship out again after a minimal resupply (and setting the timer for any of the party’s plans).
    • Follow the cultists and eliminate them on the road.
    • Get ahead of the cultists and try to beat them to wherever the Carnath Roadhouse was located.

The Beholder’s Lament

  • Pliny made his way to the Trade Ward of Waterdeep and found the pubic inn and tavern he saught: The Beholder’s Lament
    • It was neither the nicest inn (those who wanted someplace pleasant to stay could choose from plenty of better inns close by) nor the shabbiest (those who wanted a cheap, dirty place where no one would bother them wouldn’t stay there).
  • When he entered, Pliny could feel a little tingle of magic at the doorway.
  • There was a gruff tavern mistress at the bar
    • Pliny took no time approaching and trying to charm her.
    • His striking good looks and general way with words (Persuasion Nat 20) quickly got her trading beer and stories. She introduced herself as Nera
    • As she passed him a beer, she looked around and confirmed that no one was watching them. that there’s nobody looking, “But what are you playing at?”
    • Pliny: “Do you know my friend here?” and he made a if playing a harp.
    • Nera gives him a wink and a nod, Leosin’s actually upstairs. He mentioned, you might be coming, though probably with friends”
    • Pliny: “Ah, well, as much as I’d like to stay with you….”
  • Nera walked him to the the staircase in the back that took him to the second floor.

Leosin

  • When Pliny reached the top of the stairs, he saw Leosin at the far end of a table.
  • A tall noble in rich dress was seated and leaning over the table. They were finishing up an obviously-contentious meeting.
    • The noble: “ANYONE can meet safely within these walls. The power of this city is in it’s freedom. We have temples to Cyric and Shar for gods sakes! Even your vaunted Cult of the Dragon can gather here freely, if they do so according to our laws and peacefully.”
  • Leosin saw Pliny as he entered, and broke out slowly and then wider into a smile, Pliny!
  • Pliny: Leosin! Or should I say ‘dad’ apparently, huh?”
  • Leosin: “Dad?… Oh, she’s a very nice lady. I do… I do appreciate meeting her, but no, no, no.”
  • Leosin turned to his companion, Lord Neverember, I would like you to meet one of the people I was talking to you about. This is Pliny.”
    • Pliny: “The Pleasant.”
    • Leosin: Pliny The Pleasant.
  • Lord Neverember stood and greeted the bard with a politician’s smile and handshake, “Oh, hi. Nice to meet you, welcome to our fair city.”
    • Pliny: “No, pleasure’s all mine.”
    • Neverember: “Welcome to our fair city.”
    • Pliny: “Thank you, thank you. It sounds like ‘fair’ is the exact word to describe the city.”
  • Lord Neverember nodded “Yes!”, and he turns around to Leosin, “And we’ll talk later.”
    • Neverember turned back to Pliny “Best wishes to you, it was great to meet you.”
    • Pliny: “Thank you, Sir, can you can you can you do a backflip?”
    • Neverember: “I cannot, can you?”
    • Pliny: “Might as well try.”
      • Pliny (Acrobatics Nat 1) proceeded to land flat on his face (but somehow made it look a pratfall, Performance Nat 20).
    • Neverember let out a full politician’s guffaw and slapped his knee, “That was amazing.” (and then turned to Leosin with a shrug that said “What the fuck is this?”)
  • Lord Neverember bowed, “It was very nice meeting you,” and left.
  • Leosin: “Bring me good news.”
  • Pliny proceeded to provide a creative introduction that included, “identify a few of the members,” “it’s been tricky,” “there’s a horse fucker,” “a genie lamp,” “a guy who talked about dirt,” and then finally he pulled out his Journal.
  • Starting over from the beginning, he walked Leosin through their adventure so far.
  • By the end, Leosin was quite wound up: “What are you doing, you’re supposed to be following the trail, and the money. Find out where they’re going. What are you doing emptying their coffers? You’re supposed to be following them.”
  • Leosin: “Your goal was to figure out what they’re doing. Yeah, we want to stop them, but these couple little carts that you stole from, how’s that going to help the mission? Where’s Rezmir?”
    • Pliny: “I should’ve brought Aegar here to this meeting.”
  • Pliny invited Leosin to dinner and discussion with the others, then changed the subject to rings and magical crafting.
    • Pliny: “I took this ring from my mom, and I’ve been trying to trying to get it to work. I need your guidance, some blessing, something from up your sleeve. I need to make sure that when I do this, it’s going to going to be set. Do you have any any magic to give me some support, any guidance, wish me luck, anything?”
      • Pliny: “I know you’re not just a spy. There’s no way you get this much respect for just being a spy.”
  • Leosin: “I am a man of few talents and many words. This sounds like a them a job for the House of Inspired Hands, not for me. But I do know a guy.”
  • Leosin had Pliny grab a drink while he finished a few things,

The House of the Moon - Part 1

  • While Pliny was getting lectured for the party’s performance so far, Zoyana sought out Selune’s House of the Moon in the Sea Ward.
  • As she approached, Zoyana eyed the tallest temple tower in Waterdeep, 75 feet high and gilt with gold.
  • The House of the Moon was a four story temple complex of creamy gray stone, with a central hall ringed by lesser domes. Each dome gilt with gold.
  • Zoyana entered, and after a few moments caught the eye of what looked like a minor functionary.
    • A small bureaucratic discussion ensued until Zoyana produced her letter from Priestess Ashglade in Baldur’s Gate, which sped things up quite nicely.
  • The functionary took Zoyana up a flight of stairs to a balcony where Naneatha Suaril sat in a nice lounge chair, reading a book.
    • High Priestess, you have a petitioner.”
    • Naneatha responded, Fanil, you need not call me ‘High Priestess’. And ‘a petitioner’, please.”
  • Naneatha Suaril then stood, and Zoyana saw the middle aged human female, wearing priestly nobel garb and fancy hair and jewels. She had the air of someone who never went out in public without being perfectly done up. But she also moved like she knows how to get her hands dirty in a temple ritual, were the need to arise.
  • Naneatha read the note briefly, then spoke, “This note seems rather concerning. How are you, my dear?”
    • Zoyana: “Well, I mean, I’m living my life but I’m freaked out because weird things keep happening.”
    • Naneatha: “That is quite understandable…”
  • A discussion ensued where Naneatha assured Zoyana that they were there to help, and Zoyana shared her story.
  • Naneatha led Zoyana down into central courtyard, and grabbed a small crystal container filled with a familiar swirling pearlescent liquid. She handed it to Zoyana, “This will help us get a sense of what’s going on and, hopefully, give us some guidance as to what happened before.”
    • Zoyana drank, and felt a familiar tingling in her fingers, and then started to sweat before she got the chills and her hair stood on edge.
  • Then Naneatha started chanting a humming musical sound, and Zoyana felt literally all of the hairs on her body stand on end, and in her hair got caught up in the static electricity.
    • Naneatha: “Oh, that is interesting, what happened to you.”
    • Zoyana: “I don’t know.”
    • Naneatha: “We’re going to have to get this figured out. I have some ideas, but will need some time. I’ll need you to come back tomorrow. I should have everything ready by eight AM.”
  • Naneatha continued, “I apologize for us not being able to help you today.”
  • And please, get a good night’s sleep.”_
  • Zoyana was clearly confused, but still followed the High Priestess towards the door and let her momentum carry her down the steps.
  • As she left, she heard Naneatha, “And please, get a good night’s sleep.”

Followed

  • Zoyana left to go find a bar.
  • A couple of blocks down, she (Perception 20) got a little tingling in the back of her neck.
    • She glanced behind her, and it sure seemed like a couple of the acolytes from that temple were following her.
  • She ducked into the nearest pub, and headed immediatly for the bathroom.
  • Inside, she wildshaped into a swallow and flew out the window.

The House of Inspired Hands

  • Leosin made his way downstairs and took Pliny for a trip to the Sea Ward and the House of Inspired Hands.
  • Waterdeep’s Temple of Gond was not the impressive building that it was Baldur’s Gate, but they heard the same hammering of hammers and chanting of magic that Pliny had heard at the High House of Wonders in Baldur’s Gate.
    • Pliny: “Love the sound of this place, Leosin.”
    • Leosin: “As do I…”
  • After a couple of minutes of looking around, Leosin took Pliny to the back corner of the main workshop hall and addressed a gnome, Nesmop!”
  • Nesmop the gnome turned around and broke into a big smile, Leosin!”, and they come in for a big hug.
  • Leosin introduced them: Nesmop, I have a friend in need. Can you help him out?”
  • A short discussion ensued about what Pliny wanted and what the followers of Gond could do to help.
    • Nesmop: “Oh that’s a ring you got there. Nice texture on the runes. What do you need from me?”
    • Pliny: “I just want to increase the chances I don’t screw it up when I’m going through and mounting the final touch here.”
    • Nesmop: “Oh well, that’s not so hard but alright, so what walk me through what you plan.”
    • Pliny walked him through his plan with the ring, the instructions, the troll heart, the gold and diamonds, and his overall plan to stuff the ring in the heart and incinerate it, “I’m happy to do the magic, but I could really use a little guidance here.”
    • Nesmop looked over the ring and though over the plans, “Well, I mean look at this engraving. This is a masterwork thing you must have been doing your whole life…”
  • Nesmop started walking across the room, “Let’s see we have…” and he brought them over to a space with stone walls and a raised stone stand holding a brassier of some sort, that was clearly used to hold magical fire for crafting.
    • The place felt right for the enchantment. Especially right. This was the place. (The environment brought the enchantment DC from 20 down to 18).
  • They discussed magical fire. Pliny didn’t have any. (There was discussion of Polymorphing into a dragon, but that didn’t pan out.)
    • Nesmop: “Ah, I see… Well, that’s something that we can help with. That talk of dragons got me thinking…”
    • He walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a potion of swirling red and yellow liquid.
    • Nesmop: “I think this’ll do, but… I’m afraid that there there’s a…. there’s a small….donation that we’d often be looking for for those Friends of Gond, who we tend to do this kind of thing with.”
    • 100 gp later, Pliny had a Potion of Fire Breath to make his fire.
  • Nesmop: “Okay, so so here’s what we’re gonna do. This is your thing, and so that that helps and… but we need… we will put the ring inside of it. You have the gold dust and the diamonds, yes?”
    • Pliny: “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”
  • Nesmop: “So what we’re going to do: We’re going to make a nice little resting place for the ring inside of the heart with the gold and the diamond dust, and then we’re going to coat the outsides with it.”
    • Nesmop: “And then you are going to imbibe the potion of Fire Breath, you’re going to breathe the Fire Breath on the ring… Now there are a couple of other things I can do to help.”
      • “First, I can cast Guidance on you to add a little bit of oomph.”
      • “But actually, I think actually we should do one more. I got Ronston here, so give me a moment…” and he cut off mid sentence and walked away.
  • Nesmop came back with a buddy who was even shorter than him, “Here’s my buddy Ronston.”
  • Ronston: “I hear we’re doing some really fun stuff. Oh, can I help?”
    • Pliny: “I would love for you to help, Ronston.”

Crafting

  • Nesmop: Mr. Pliny, are you are ready to do this?”
    • Pliny: “Let’s do it. One and done. We do have to get this right.”
  • Nesmop: “All right, Ronston, we’re going to need a Bless.”
    • Ronston pulled a small flask and splashed a shake of water on Pliny, called out to Gond and wiggled his fingers, providing Pliny with the Blessing of Gond (Advantage on his crafting check)_
  • Nesmop: “Now me.” And he cast Guidance on Pliny (adding a d4 to his roll).
    • Pliny: “Thank you, thank you.”
  • Pliny: “Thank you, thank you.” Then he focused.
    • The heart was prepared, stuffed and covered with diamonds and gold, the ring inside.
    • The Potion of Fire Breath in his hand.
  • As the two did their casting, others in the room got a sense of what they were doing and started to turn towards them. Pliny had an audience.
  • Pliny took a deep breath (feeling the DC 18 in his heart), and then consumed the potion. His eyebrows furrowed, and he squinted at the heart. And then his mouth opened and fire erupted forth.
    • Possibilities flashed through his mind (16 and “I’m going to take the 16” on the Advantage die roll):
      • Him just succeeding, and
      • Him failing.
    • Then he felt a tinge of his Luck and pushed through (rolling a Nat 20 with his Lucky roll).
  • Pliny blew out his fire breath, and the gold melted, and then they saw the heart in golden flame and the tinkling of the diamonds, before the power became too intense to see any form inside.
  • The fire burned down, and the glow dissipated.. There was nothing left on the brazier except for the perfect ring.
  • The indentations in the metal where the etching of these rooms were, once empty, were now perfectly smooth with the ring, a magical energy filling over the gaps.

Congratulations

  • After a moment, Pliny blinked, and realized that the room had gone silent. Every eye was on them.
  • And when Pliny looked around, the room erupted.
    • This was a place that loved the alignment between crafting and magic. And everyone there felt the special electricity of a novice being propelled by fate into perfection.
  • Nesmop gave the energy time to rise and fall, then turned to Pliny, “Alright, but. You now have a year and a day. You’ve got to fill this thing with magic. You understand that, right?”
    • Pliny: “A year and a day.”
    • Pliny understood what was needed: fill the ring with magic. (11,250 gold pieces worth of magic you need to put into this ring, which was the equivalent of 71 fourth level spells Homebrew Rules)
      • The ring was “ready”, but would not be usable until and unless it was charged.

Regrouping

  • Pliny and Leosin joined Aegar at the inn.
  • Before conversation started in earnest, a sparrow flew into the room, circled around, pooped on Pliny’s head, and then settled into a chair and shifted back into Zoyana.
    • Aegar: “That was quite dramatic.”
  • Zoyana filled the others in on her visit to The House of the Moon and the acolytes who followed her.
  • The party and Leosin discussed the Cult of the Dragon.
  • Pliny provided an update on their prior conversation, and Leosin added few additional details.
  • Leosin expressed the same concern about stealing loot versus learning what the Cult was up to. “So, what is the Cult doing?”
    • Aegar: “Right now they are heading to the Mere of Dead Men and Castle Naertar within it.”
    • Aegar: “From there, they have been quite tight lipped about what they were going to be doing there.”
    • Aegar: “However, we figured that reducing their numbers, that seemed natural.”
    • Aegar: “The road is long me fraught with danger, and it would be possible for us to thin their numbers, giving us an advantage, once we come to the to the castle.”
    • Aegar: “We attempted to ascertain what it was they were doing by stealing their stuff. And we were waiting for this moment, actually, to determine what it is we found. We were only able to infiltrate their wagons yesterday.”
    • Pliny: “Damn, he said it so much better than I did.”
  • Leosin was still not impressed: “Yet we’ve gone in the past few months from them being a ‘crazy cult trying to bring dracoliches into the world’ to them attacking villages. You remember what happened in Greenest. It’s not the only town.”
    • Aegar: “There are others that have been attacked?”
  • Leosin: “That that festival, where you became Aegar the Generous was precipitated by Frume taking out a den of kobolds that raided multiple hamlets.”
  • Leosin: “And since then, there have been a number of towns burned. And as far as I can tell, it’s the Cult that’s doing it.”
  • Leosin: “I don’t know what they’re doing. And I don’t know why.”
    • Aegar: “Why would they, we know that they have been amassing wealth, why would they do that it’s not for dragon horde.”
  • Leosin: “Uh… but… what dragon horde? Are they trying to are they planning to create a new dracolich that they need to pay off to convince them? Is that what all of this is about?”
    • Aegar: “It may be possible. Signs lead to that point.”
  • Leosin: “That’s so that’s what I want to find out. That’s what we need to find out.”
    • Aegar: “How do we go about doing this? Because we spent two months on the road with these people, and they were very tight lipped about it. We tried and tried and tried and we are not able to ascertain any information from them.”
  • Leosin grew visibly angry, “I would say, ‘Follow the money,’ but the money is in in this bag right there.”

Choices

  • Leosin: “Yes. All of the choices are fraught with danger.”
    • “If you go with them, you know where they are. And they can find you out and they could kill you.”
    • “If you try to follow them, then you could lose the trail. Or they could find you following them, and they could kill you.”
    • “If you get ahead of them, and try to ambush them, they might catch the ambush before it comes and get around you. But if you know where the Roadhouse is, then you might be able to get ahead of them enough to figure out where they go from there. It’s that connection that’s a problem.”
  • Leosin: “It sounds like they know you, so if you’re there when they get there that feels like it’d be weird.”
    • Leosin: “I don’t know what that story is. You’d have to come up with a story to explain how it is that you ended up at the same place as them, but you didn’t go with them.”
  • Leosin: “If you don’t stay ahead of them, and ambush them, then What are you going to tell the people that are expecting them to arrive? Or how are you going to do that next step?”
  • Aegar: “So it’s more advantageous of us to go with them. And they are ticket into the Castle or wherever they go past the Roadhouse?”
  • Leosin: “I would say kind of like the eggs… the choice is yours.”
  • Leosin: “I would probably go with them. But i’m not walking around and plate armor, turning into a turtle.”
  • The party discussed their options.
    • Pliny: “Having been with the Cult, they don’t seem like they’re moving too fast attack us, but I feel like we left them and it would be at risk going back with them for too long. I was a little apprehensive to to follow them. But if we think they’re the key, it might to be worth it.”
    • Pliny asked Leosin if he could get any ideas from the guy he was talking to earlier, “the mayor”.
      • Leosin: High Lord Dagult Neverember, the Open Lord of Waterdeep? He’s not going to go with you.”
      • Aegar recognized the reference to the all-but-king of Waterdeep (which was ruled by a council of anonymous, masked High Lords except for the one Open Lord.
      • Leosin: “I’m trying to get the Lord’s Alliance to recognize that this isn’t just some normal thing; that there’s something going on. But Mr Politician was not particularly interested in recognizing that maybe there’s a bunch of bad people slipping about his town.”

Scrying

  • The conversation led into what magical means they might have to gather more information, including Scrying.
  • They discussed multiple targets, and ultimately settled on Rezmir
  • Zoyana began the 10-minute cast of Scrying on Rezmir.
    • Zoyana’s vision opened behind Rezmir, with the half-dragon lounging in a chair by a fire, with a glass of wine in her hand.
    • Rezmir was alone, drinking a glass of wine.
    • The room was nicely adorned, with stone walls, a stone floor, and a stone ceiling. She was in a castle.
    • Zoyana (Perception 25) spent most of her 10 minutes examining the surroundings. She could tell that this was a private room or study of some sort. There were some papers on a small writing desk, but they were covered in such a way that she could not read them. Clearly, another time, things on the desk might be readable.
    • Before the time was up, Rezmir looked over her shoulder. On top of her scaly face, she wore an obsidian-black dragon-head mask.
      • As she turned, Rezmir she stopped. And looked right at you the spot where Zoyana’s vision originated.
      • Rezmir addressed the spot in her choppy, croaking voice, “Oh, who are you?”
    • And then the room went black.
  • Back at the inn: Zoyana: “I got nothing.”
    • Aegar: “It didn’t work?”
    • She explained what she saw.

Charging the ring

  • Before bed, Pliny explained what he needed in terms of help to complete the enchantment of his ring: it needed spells cast into it to charge the magic.
  • Pliny charged the ring with one Fifth-level and one Fourth-level spells (giving himself 1 level of exhaustion).
  • Aegar charged the ring with two Second-level spells (giving himself 1 level of exhaustion).
  • Zoyana charged the ring with two Fourth-level spells (giving herself 1 level of exhaustion).
  • Fang charged the ring with two Third-level spells (giving himself 1 level of exhaustion).
  • (For a total of 990 gp of charging)

Fang felt itchy

  • Fang shared that he didn’t like it in Waterdeep, and that it made him feel itchy and tingly.
  • Zoyana tried using Healing Word, but that only provided momentary relief.
  • After some discussion, they realized that the Dragon Ward in Waterdeep were probably effecting the faerie dragon, though obviously not as harshly as it did to chromatic or metalic dragons.
  • Fang was clear that he thought he could make it for a couple days, but that he didn’t like it and wanted to get out of the city. He definitely didn’t want a stay like in Baldur’s Gate.

The House of the Moon - Part 2

  • The next morning, Zoyana and the others were greeted by an acolyte upon arrival at the House of the Moon.
  • Acolyte: “We’re glad you came. The high priestess made preparations, please follow me.”
    • Zoyana: “My friends are coming too.”
    • Acolyte: “They are welcome.”
  • Pliny stepped up immediately, “Thank you so much.”
  • Aegar was a little more hesitant, but (Insight 11) didn’t detect anything out of sorts.
  • Pliny provided Bardic Inspiration: “So I understand this could be a difficult day for you, and I just want to inspire you a little.”
  • The acolyte led them down to an open courtyard. There was a small pool in the center, with moss growing along the sides.
  • When they entered into the courtyard, the High Priestess was already there.
    • She was standing at a small bar that had some cups and pitchers on it.
  • She turned to the party, “Welcome. I’m glad you came.”
    • Zoyana: “I wasn’t sure I was going to.”
  • High Priestess: “I’m sorry if our followers were discourteous, but the note was a little concerning and we needed time to prepare.”
  • Zoyana: “But why did you have people following me?”
  • High Priestess: “I was worried more about you than us. We were looking for people who were following you. But that’s neither here nor there. Are you here to find out what’s going on with you?”
  • Zoyana looked to Aegar while Pliny stared down theHigh Priestess.
  • High Priestess: “Well, met friends.”
  • Zoyana: “I’m ready.”
  • Aegar: “We are with you.”
  • Pliny: “I’m ready.”
  • High Priestess: “Then we’re going to take a little vision quest and try and break through whatever that barrier was.”
  • High Priestess: “Are you sure you don’t know what it was that happened?”
  • Zoyana: “I don’t remember.”
  • High Priestess: “Are you sure you want to know?”
    • Zoyana looked at Aegar again.
    • Aegar: “It is whatever you decide. You are in control of your own life.”
  • Zoyana: “I do.”
  • The High Priestess instructed Zoyana to drink another draft and lay down in the pool.
    • The High Priestess handed her a cup that contained a dark, swirling liquid.
  • Zoyana fiddled with her my vial of river water and then drank.
    • It was almost tasteless, with a slight metallic feel.
  • As she drank, she felt her body sink. The High Priestess guided Zoyana to sit down into the pool and then lay back.
    • Zoyana felt herself floating, her body perfectly buoyant with the water.
  • Zoyana heard the High Priestess start to chant behind her, and the need to sleep came over her. Zoyana’s eyes closed.
