In this session, our party eliminated more raiders, drowned some people, cowered below a dragon, and learned to respect some rats…
Intro
- The session started with party ushering the family, Aegar holding the body of the deceased father Tom, quickly and quietly toward the keep.
- Down a side road, the party spied another group of two humans in black leather, with five kobolds walking behind them, headed up the path toward the party. Zoyana recognized the garb of the humans as the same as the guards in the cave.
- Speaking quietly, the party urged Linan Swift to hurry her children to the keep and safety.
The next raiders
- As the party stealthed their way closer, one of the humans pointed toward a house, and the kobolds kicked the door in.
- Violence ensued
- Aegar turned some kobolds to paste
- Zoyana the brown bear removed one human’s armor with violence, and ate some kobolds.
- Pliny slipped into the house through a window, and threw some bolts indoors.
- The party failed to identify a reason that the raiders chose this particular house, but they did relieve one of the humans of his black leather armor and clothing.
- Zoyana looked west, and saw a series of torches, indicating a large number of raiders would be arriving soon. So the party headed back towards the keep.
- As the party reached the intersection of the south road and the road to the keep, they split:
- Zoyana and Aegar headed to the keep, while
- Pliny took his station atop the last house before the river (ninja flip, Acrobatics 22)
Drowning for good
- Pliny did not have to wait long for the first band of raiders to start crossing the river: 3 humans shepherding 6 kobolds.
- The kobolds did not want to enter the water, causing the group to bunch up.
- As the first of the group reached the middle of the river, Pliny unleashed his dastardly plan: his Mage Hand held a specially-prepared net aloft over the river. With a flick of his magical wrist, Pliny engulfed the entire party in his net.
- 7 of the raiders failed their saves and were dragged under water immediately. Of the two others, only one was able to cut herself out of the net.
- While the net dragged the doomed raiders downriver, the one escapee struggled towards the north bank.
- Pliny took cold, calculated aim, and sent a crossbow bolt through the kobold’s eye, and sent her downriver with her compatriots.
- After a few moments of watching the pile of bodies caught in the net and rocks, Pliny looked toward the south:
- There were a large number of torches heading north, and not that far away.
- Pliny reset his trap with another net, and set to wait. It did not take long.
- The next party was a group of 5 chatty mercenaries.
- As they approached the river, Pliny could hear them talking:
- Great. You sure there’s no bridges around here?
- Damnit. Just a little water. We can walk across.
- I want some of those pastries. Not the bad ones, some good ones.
- You mean the ones that got Dave and Dale?
- Yeah, those looked really good. You see the look on Dale’s face before the puking hit? That looked like one tasty pastry.
- You see the look on Don and Dean’s faces when they fucked off?
- Yeah. They were like “fuck this!” and ran…
- That’s how I feel about this water
- Alright alright. Let’s get across. Maybe I’ll find me some new boots
- The net dropped on the second group. The leader tripped and twisted himself in the net. The archer got her bow caught up in the net. And the group got pulled downriver…
- After a few minutes of looking, the view obscured by the night and the rain, Pliny saw no movement in the pile of bodies.
- Soon after, Pliny saw torches from a much larger group moving closer. He climbed down, intending to head to the keep…
Arrival at the keep
- Aegar, carrying Tom Smith, and Zoyana, as a brown bear, reached the keep.
- Aegar dropped off Tom’s body, and found the Smith family.
- Zoyana scared the living crap out of one of the townsfolk, who turned around to see a giant grizzly towering above him. With kind telepathic words and a nod of her head (Persuasion 19), she deescalated the situation and walked back out the keep entrance.
- A couple priests from the Temple of Chauntea approached Aegar and thanked him for the help preparing the supplies. They handed over a Potion of Healing to Aegar, despite his protestations.
- Aegar checked-in with Governor Nighthill, who was nonplussed that it had taken so long to go out and report back.
- Governor Nighthill sounds the horn to close the gates.
- Pliny hurrys toward the gates
- Zoyana roars and makes it clear to the guards that they would be holding the gates until Pliny returned (Hodor!)
Torches!
- A cry sounded from one of the guards, as torches were spotted crossing the river just south of the keep.
- Governor Nighthill called for archers, then thanked Aegar for the fact that they had been able to prepare.
- Zoyana dropped her wildshape and rushed to the top of the walls.
- As the first torches cleared the trees, Governor Nighthill called “Loose!”, and the dozen archers plus Aegar released a volley of arrows and crossbow bolts.
- A couple of the torches fell, as the wielders were apparently hit.
- Calls of “Archers! They’ve got archers!” rise from the attackers, who fall back into the trees.
- Governor Nighthill turned to Aegar with a smile: _“We might… we might survive. We could not have done it without you”
2200: The Dragon & the Tunnel (Greenest population: 1,189 Confirmed survivors: 192)
The Dragon
- A moment later, a wave of Fear swept across the keep, a roar was heard, and a bolt of lightening struck the north wall of the keep, frying two of the guards. And then a blue dragon flew into view.

- Aegar and Pliny, along with most of the people in sight succumbed to the fear and cowered in fright.
- Zoyana was able to shrug off the wave, but even she felt it.
- The dragon continued its path, swooping across the town before dissapearing into the clouds and the night.
- Governor Nighthill: _“Oh shi…. They have a dragon. We’re fucked. We’re so fucked.”
- Aegar and Governor Nighthill discussed, and the party were sent to find Escobert the Red and the the key to the old tunnel below the keep
The Tunnel
- Escobert the Red directed the party to the cellar beneath the keep and opened the doorway to the tunnel.
- The party snuck their way down the tunnel until they came to a locked door.
- Pliny checked for traps, and used his mustache theives tools to unlock the door without even a click (Thieves Tools 24).
- As the party stepped past the door, with Aegar in the lead, a swarm of rats attacked. Then two more swarms of rats joined in. Mayhem ensued.
- Aegar jumped around trying to keep the pesky rats out of his plate armor. His warhammer seemed to do less damage than it should, although the light from his gauntlets and his Smiting worked just fine.
- Zoyana covered a swarm with oil and lit it on fire. And discovered that swarms of rats can occupy the same space as the people they are attacking. The rats lit on fire. Zoyana lit on fire. The rats burned. Zoyana burned. And the fire finally went out.
- Pliny blew a Sleep spell, slaughtered some rats with Shatter, and then Viciously Mocked some.
- The party healed up, burning a couple spell slots and points from Lay on Hands in the process.
- The session ended with the players reaching the locked exit gate…
