In this session, our party learned much more about Leosin and the Cult of the Dragon (and began to perpare Greenest for an undefendable attack)…
- As the party completed their Celebration Feast at Greenest Keep, a guard had whispered in Governor Nighthill’s ear. He excused himself, and then returned with a new guest on his heels: Leosin Erlanthar…
- “My friends, I would like to introduce Leosin Erlanthar.”
- As the party rose to greet him, Leosin says with intensity: “Nighthill, this is serious!”
- Nighthill continued to the table and looked over his shoulder to reply “I know monk, that’s why I brought you in here… They were looking for you anyway.”
- Leosin: “Who?” And he looked to the party.
- Brief introductions and backgrounds ensued.
- Aegar (and Pliny) gave an accounting of their adventures in Phlan. (Governor Nighthill was much more satisfied with this retelling than Aegar’s recent dry tales):
- The Pool of Radiance that the party left before investigating.
- Finding the dragon bones in Xandria’s crypt.
- The laboratory and potion that the party had seen. (Leosin made a note to return to that discussion when/if everyone survives the next week)
- The red mage and discussion of Tiamat. (which made little sense to Leosin)
- The message from Wylder’s patron for Leosin: “Seek Varram the White in the Serpent Hills”
- Leosin’s incredulous reply: “Your friend, who’s not here, has a friend, who’s not here, who told her to tell you to tell me this message?”
- (Leosin knew of Varram the White, but not where he was nor what he might be up to)
- Aegar (and Pliny) gave an accounting of their adventures in Phlan. (Governor Nighthill was much more satisfied with this retelling than Aegar’s recent dry tales):
- In the midst of the introductions, Leosin shared his news:
- The Cult of the Dragon has been hitting villages south and west of Greenest.
- A bunch of mercenaries and some obvious Cult of the Dragon reinforcements just arrived. There were black and blue wearers of purple, among other cult members. At least 200 so far, with more coming in.
- They’re doing something in a cave at the far end of the camp, but I wanted to come back before trying to get closer.
- If I could tell, I’d say a week or less before hundreds of them descend on Greenest.
- Throughout the discussion, Leosin shared the location of the camp (a couple days south-southwest of Greenest)
- and drew out a description of the camp itself: nestled in a small valley surrounded by cliffs, one way in, one way out.
- Camp description:
- The camp sits in the hollow of a rocky plateau that’s shaped roughly like a horseshoe. The lower portion of the plateau rises gently from the surrounding land, but it quickly steepens to cliffs ascending to a height of 150 feet above the landscape. Boulders form jumbled heaps at the bases of the cliffs. The level shelves and top of the plateau are covered in long grass, and brush and scrubby trees grow in patches.
- In addition to the tents of the gathering raiders, there are two wooden guard towers about 20 feet tall. One at the mouth of the hollow, and another up on a shelf along the cliffs.
- They had tents and some minor fortifications, but little else. no siege weapons, no organized cavalry, etc.
- It looked like multiple mercenary bands and a mottled group. It’s more than we can handle, but definitely not an organized army.
- What Leosin knows of the Cult of the Dragon:
- Leosin had been researching the Cult of the Dragon in Berdusk and Candlekeep, and came across (among other things)
- The indication that Xandria in Phlan had actually been a polymorphed dragon
- That the Cult was up to something big and unprecedented
- That some dragon eggs were available in the Greenfields, and possibly in Greenest itself
- Leosin had been researching the Cult of the Dragon in Berdusk and Candlekeep, and came across (among other things)
- History of the Cult of the Dragon (as shared by Leosin)
- The wizard Sammaster founded the Cult of the Dragon after receiving some wisdom that included the passage:
- “And naught will be left save shattered thrones with no rulers. But the dead dragons shall rule the world entire, and….”
- The Cult has for centuries focused on raising dracoliches to both bring about this prophesy, and be on the good side of the dead dragons when they come into rule. Sammaster developed the formula for the potion used in the dracolich transformation, and only the Cult knows the “recipe”
- (The potion the party found in Phlan was a brewed potion, and it would have been… unfortunate… if the party imbibed the concoction.)
- The Cult is organized around the 5 primary colors of chromatic dragons (red, black, blue, green, white), and so the blue reinforcements to the black who were already at the camp feels weird.
- The leadership of the cult are known as the “wearers of purple”.

Preparations
Day 0:
- The party discussed the options of leaving Greenest, scouting or attacking the raiders in their camp, and helping Greenest prepare to defend itself.
- Governor Nighthill was rather clear that the party would be helping Greenest prepare, and the word “deputize” was mentioned, though he encouraged the party to discuss amongst themselves.
- Running was dismissed out of hand <aren’t our suicidal heroes cute?>
- Scouting or attacking the raiders was discussed in detail, but the distance to the camp and the party’s ability to effect the plans or progress of a 200+ person army led the party to dive into preparations.
- As the conversation turned to planning, Aegar subtly took the lead in partnership with Governor Nighthill and with support from Pliny, Father Falconmoon, and Escobert the Red. Zoyana was uncharacteristically quiet.
- The group laid out a map of Greenest and set to making a plan for the town’s defense.
- Aegar expects the attack to come from the south (Perception 17)
- The group laid out a map of Greenest and set to making a plan for the town’s defense.
- Pliny excused himself after some time and began a bardly tour of the town’s bars, searching for any Cult of the Dragon spies and gathering some caravan guards to support Greenest (Performance 19)
- Zoyana noticed that the Bugbears on the road had an Ambush Drake, and were probably offshoots of the mercenaries. (Perception 12)
Day 1:
- Pliny:
- The next morning, Pliny enlisted Minerva to bake some poisoned goods (using Aegar’s poisoned vials), and set to make honeypots on the east (in the same spot they met the bandits previously) and south roads. Taking most of the day, Pliny hid the pasteries poorly for the raiders to find on their way to town (Deception 19).
- Pliny spent the rest of the afternoon and into the evening “rallying the troups” (Persuasion 22)
- Pliny didn’t think anything special of not seeing Zoyana during Day 1.
- Aegar:
- Set Sgt. Markguth to training the townsfolk to fight
- Anyone who has used a bow (Acrobatics 11)
- Anyone healthy who can use a pike
- Checked in with Gruffo Riverhopper and the other blacksmiths to get his plate mail and set them to working on weapons (Athletics 25)
- Sitting with the town folk and praying (Religion nat 1); the Dragonborn got taken for a memeber of the Cult of the Dragon by more than one townsfolk
- Aegar didn’t think anything special of not seeing Zoyana during Day 1.
- Set Sgt. Markguth to training the townsfolk to fight
- Governor Nighthill and the people of Greenest:
- Send message to outlying farms and villages to run or come to the keep for safety
- The wizard had not been seen in some time (and was a questionable ally in the best of times), so no wizard
- Zoyana:
- Spoke briefly with Eled the innkeeper, and then obtained a horse from the guards at the keep.
- Riding toward the camp (Survival 25) - got there that night
- Zoyana cast Pass Without Trace, wildshaped into a fox, and snuck into the camp like she was damn-near invisible (Stealth 20).
- She spent about 15 minutes sneaking into the camp and exploring (Perception 7):
- Zoyana noticed multiple factions of mercenaries (a couple non-human) and it looked like two different factions of the cult: Blue and Black.
- The command tent was fairly quiet
- Generally confirmed the layout that Leosin described
- Zoyana noticed multiple factions of mercenaries (a couple non-human) and it looked like two different factions of the cult: Blue and Black.
- As she reached the back of the camp, she spotted a cave, with a few kobolds that looked like they were with the black group heading in.
- She spent about 15 minutes sneaking into the camp and exploring (Perception 7):
- After waiting a few minutes, she snuck closer and looked to see if there are bad guys in the cave (Perception 16): she saw no one.
- She snuck into cave just past the first stalactite, and saw guards walking back up the cave towards the entrance.
- Past the entrance, she narrowly avoided the violet fungi in the mushroom garden and chose not to open some pots at the far end.
- In the next room, she spotted some dead bats on the floor and looked up to see a group of stirges sleeping on the ceiling. Her soft footsteps were enough to keep from disturbing them.
- Up ahead, she spied the garbage dump.
- To the left, she spotted a trap of some sort on the ground, and then a room where sleeping drakes were being held.
- From the drake room, stairs led down, but she didn’t explore them.
- Instead she headed back down past the garbage dump, wildshaped into a spider, and crawled into a cold room that was hung with meat at various levels of freshness (or rot).
- Back near the entrance, she headed down a hidden side passage, and glanced one way into an empty room, then to a closed door.
- Looking under the door, she saw a room full of sleeping leather-clad guards, and chose to enter.
- She snuck past the guards and to the entrance of the next room, in which she saw rich adornments and a sleeping woman with black? hair and a look of authority.
- Not wanting to test her luck or run out of time, she returned to the entrance, climbed on the ceiling to avoid the guards, and headed back to the camp.
- Zoyana sucessfully snuck her way out of the camp, and took a long-needed rest where she had left her horse.
Day 2:
- Pliny:
- In an effort to dishearten and scare away the raiders, Pliny gathered the stone statues of the kobolds and cast Magic Mouth on them with the message: “Brothers of the cult, turn back before too late or take for Granite the rest of your fate *Children’s laughing sounds abound*” set to trigger as travelers pass. (Intimidation 20)
- By the end of Day 2, Pliny spoke with Eled the innkeeper, who shared that Zoyana had left the prior morning with most her things and saying that she would be back (and implying that she didn’t want to advertise her plans).
- From that, he and Aegar surmised that she had gone to investigate the raiders’ camp.
- Aegar:
- Worked to befriend and cajole folks to get on board with the defense plans (no religion involved). (Persuasion 21)
- Prepare the defenses (survival 17)
- clear the trees down by the river
- fletch every arrow known to man
- stones and fires & boiling oil on the walls
- poles on the walls to push off ladders
- Zoyana:
- Returned to the camp & observing preparations. Some tents were being struck, and the camp seemed to be alive. Zoyana spared no time searching more, and high-tailed it back to her horse.
- In the rain, with a trail-weary horse, she made it a bit more than 1/2 way back to Greenest.
Day 3:
- Pliny:
- Prepared attack and escape plans:
- Parkour on rooftops: memorizing navigation plans throughout the town between and upon the buildings (Acrobatics 13)
- Positions for archers to attack and spots to hide (in the trees, etc) for Pliny to Mage Hand nets onto attackers fording the river (Stealth 11)
- Prepared attack and escape plans:
- Aegar:
- Make fallback points to make a stand at the keep (History 16)
- Reinforce the sally port & other fortifications - (Survival 16)
- Continued support of Sgt Markguth’s training
- Continued work to get folks on board
- Zoyana:
- The rain continued on and off, and she continued her trek back to Greenest…
