Session 69 - The Misty Forest - Nice! (recap)

In this session, our party made their way to Waterdeep, fought off a raid by the Cult of the Dragon, met with the Council, and headed into the Misty Forest in search of a rumored Green Dragon menace…

Flying Castle

  • The session started with the castle taking off and the iceberg below them breaking apart.
  • As they flew south, they saw the ice hunters running for their canoes, and the Frostskimmr casting off with captain Lerustah Half-face at the helm.

Maccath’s Bargain

  • A long, tedious negotiation with Maccath filled the first couple weeks of the flight back to Waterdeep.
    • Marfulb and the ice toads provided an accounting of the items from the two hordes, as they slowly defrosted the castle horde without damaging the castle itself.
    • Aegar and the party wanted to know how to fly the castle and wanted the magic items that they obtained from the two hordes identified.
    • Maccath wanted all of the writings that had ended up in the party’s possession.
    • Neither side wanted to trust.

Learnings

  • In the process of discussing with Maccath, the party learned:
    • About Maccath
      • Maccath valued the Brotherhood’s stolen items and the other writings she had on Oyaviggaton above all else. Which is why she wouldn’t leave without them, and was why she was so adamant that the party honor their bargain once the castle was in flight.
    • About Skyreach Castle
      • Now that Arauthator was dead, Maccath could control the castle via the runes in the control tower and Escarlotta’s help.
      • Escarlotta and the history of the castle, including her late husband Blagothus who wanted to use the Cult to stir up support with the Giants.
      • How to control castle through Escarlotta (“You just have to convince her that you want to fight dragons and you’re strong enough to hold the castle”)
      • A tour of the Control Room:
        • A staircase of ice lead from the tower’s ground floor to a higher chamber with a giant door. Pliny, had seen this door as he raced to and from the roof, but did not enter during the white dragon fight.
        • Inside, the walls and ceiling gleamed and glittered. Jewels were everywhere in the room: glowing moonstones, thumb-sized emeralds, shining silvery mithral wands, and strange spheres covered in turquoise and gold, as well as dozens of copper levers and golden spheres embedded in the walls.
        • After a moment, the walls themselves seemed to disappear, providing a perfect aerial view in all directions, as if there were no castle and no cloudstuff around.
        • More than a dozen glowing white runes winked into existence, drifting about the room like snowflakes.
        • When commanding the castle, Maccath seemed to reach out effortlessly, and the wanted rune was immediately at hand.
      • The castle needed repairs, and Waterdeep was the nearest (only?) place Maccath knew that could be done
    • About Dragons
      • As a White Dragon, Arauthator normally would have run run, and then sought revenge for as long as the party lived, but the eggs kept it close and drove it a bit mad.
      • Though he’d hate the idea of abandoning a home with its treasure and trophies, if bested by adventurers, Arauthator would have fled to one of his other lairs.
      • When the Draakhorn sounded, Arauthator bristled and ordered everyone off Oyaviggaton, which Talis and the others did not like. So Arauthator killed Glazhael. That would likely not have happened save for the eggs.
    • About Dragon Hordes
      • Maccath led them on a long tangent about the value of gold and it’s use to dragons.
      • As dragons progress in their youth, they gather their hordes to about 10,000 gp worth of value. A magical connection to these hordes powers and sustains them.
      • As their hordes continue to grow, they seem to feel a tension: on the one hand, they want their hordes to be larger. On the other hand, having one horde means one point of failure.
      • So at about 10,000 gp worth of value, they tend to split their hordes or go out and take the horde of another dragon.
      • And so they progress, growing their hordes in size and number. Growing stronger with the added value.
      • The connection is strong. If a dragon were to be killed and its horde left in tact, well, a lich’s phylactery is the best analogy. They would reform atop that horde, as long as it was a horde.
        • Maccath went off on another tangent wondering if that could be how the Cult of the Dragon convinces them to become Dracoliches… having a true phylactery means their strength would no longer be tied to the value of their hordes…
    • About the Cult of the Dragon
      • The Draakhorn was there when Maccath came to Oyaviggaton, but a group of humans wearing distinctive robes came to the iceberg half a year ago. After negotiation with Arauthator, they took the device away.
        • The party recognized the Cult of the Dragon regalia in Maccath’s description of the humans.
      • The Draakhorn was once the horn of Tiamat’s ancient red dragon consort, Ephelomon, which she gave to the dragons to help them in their war against the giants.
      • The Draakhorn is a signaling device, and it is so large that it requires two Medium creatures (or one Large or bigger creature) to hold it while a third creature sounds it, making the earth resonate to its call.
      • The low, moaning drone of the Draakhorn alerts all dragons within thousands of miles to rise and be wary, for great danger is at hand.
      • The old writings tell of coded blasts that were once used to signal specific messages.
      • Those with knowledge of the Draakhorn’s history know that it was first built to signal danger to dragons of all types (Metallic & Chromatic)
        • It appears that the Cult of the Dragon has corrupted to call chromatic dragons from across the North.
        • Maccath went off on a tangent wondering if it could be used to coerce metallic dragons to stand by, or even to join it’s call.

Note from Marfulb and her toads

  • Along the way, Marfulb provided the party an accounting of the treasure obtained from both hordes and the scriptorium.
  • The party appended the identifications once Maccath provided them.

Cult Strikes Back - Red Dragon

  • The party was attacked by a human riding a young red dragon and a pair of wyverns each carrying a pair of cultists.
  • The party learned that a red dragon’s breath is rather… powerful
  • Maccath ran for the control room, and soon after, the clouds around the castle begam to darken and churn, becoming rumbling thunderclouds over time.
    • For the next several rounds, lightning bolts struck out at the red dragon and rider.
  • The fight went back and forth, the attackers slowly whittling away at the Looters, and themselves dying one-by-one.
  • After seeing the party taking severe damage, Maccath, apparently benefiting from the Fly spell, flew out of the control tower and took on the red dragon blasting a Cone of Cold around the wyrm.
    • They traded attacks, but Maccath fell to the ground, unmoving, and either unconscious or dead.
  • Not long after, an arrow from Pliny’s Swift Quiver landed home, and the red dragon fell lifeless to the icy courtyard.
    • In the blast of energy that followed, the party saw red. Burning, radiating heat. A power that suffused their bodies entire. They felt emboldened and refreshed.

Revivifying Maccath

  • As soon as the red dragon fell dead, Aegar raced to Maccath to heal her, but found her dead instead.
  • Aegar reached for his pouch and pulled out the silver necklace recently obtained from the white dragon’s horde and said a prayer in hopes that the diamond was enough to power the spell.
    • <Nat 20> It was, and upon casting Revivify, Maccath took a breath and opened her startled eyes.
  • The party begain to Loot.
  • As thanks, Maccath handed over control of the castle: Escarlotta, these are the dragon slayers who freed the castle from the dragons. The castle is theirs now.”

Severin, the Red Dragon Wyrmspeaker

  • When Aegar touched the dragon rider, a shock jolted his mind, and the air crackled with malevolent energy.
  • A mist swirled in the air before the party, and the visage of a man materialized. His cold gaze fixed on the party, and then he smirked darkly.
    • Zoyana immediately recognized him from her memories, as the human in charge when he, Rezmir, and the hooded woman led to the purple mist on that fateful day. Severin
  • He addressed the party, his voice exuding authority and menace:
    • “Ah, the meddling little flies that buzz around my grand design. How quaint.” He gestured toward the fallen dragon rider and the slain red dragon. ”I must admit; I did not anticipate such a spectacle. But let’s not pretend your actions mean anything in the grand scheme of things._
    • “You see, I am not here to invite you to dance with dragons or to exchange pleasantries. You have stumbled into the path of an unstoppable force, a force that will bring this world to its knees. And you, my dear adventurers, can be either stepping stones or insignificant obstacles. The choice is yours.
    • “The Cult of the Dragon is destined to triumph. It is our fate written in the very stars above us. Those who oppose us become dust beneath the claws of the mighty, forgotten and lost in the relentless tides of time. Joining us is not a suggestion; it is a matter of survival.
    • “Your so-called victories mean nothing. Rezmir’s death, the dragon’s fall – mere inconveniences. You are gnats, and I am the hand that swats them. You think you have power, but you have yet to glimpse the true depths of what awaits those who pledge allegiance to the true masters of this realm.
    • “Bow before me, and I shall grant you mercy. But dare to defy me, and you will know pain unlike any you can fathom. My reach extends far, and my wrath knows no bounds. You have seen a mere sliver of what the Cult is capable of, but believe me, it is only the beginning.
    • “The world trembles as Tiamat stirs in her prison, yearning to break free and bathe the realm in her glory. As we gather her treasures, the time of reckoning approaches. A new world order, where dragons rule and mortals kneel, is nigh.
    • “Now, you have a choice to make. Join the Cult of the Dragon, embrace your fate as cogs in the grand machine, and perhaps, just perhaps, you may survive this ordeal. Refuse, and your insignificant existence will be snuffed out like a candle in a storm.
    • “Make no mistake – this is not a negotiation. This is your one chance to align yourselves with the inevitable, to serve the true masters of this world. Do not squander it with foolish heroics and false bravado.
    • “When we sent Umphrey and his squad, we did not know that those who murdered Rezmir were also the ones to clear Skyreach of the betrayer Aurathator. That’s a mistake we will not make again.
    • “I shall take my leave now, but know this – I am watching, and I am patient. When next we meet, your loyalty will be tested, and the consequences of your choice will be laid bare. Choose wisely, if you can.”
    • Severin’s form dissipated into the darkness, leaving the party in chilling silence.

Aegar & The Lady of the Spring

  • In a dream, the Lady asked Aegar to sprinkle some spring water on the castle grounds. Aegar saw himself pouring, and Zoyana planting a small pinecone.

Aegar & Pond

  • Aegar shared his dream with the party, and the next day cast Create Food and Water to fill a pitcher and walked out into the Lower Courtyard.
  • Aegar poured water from his pitcher onto the frosted ground. As it splashed, a puddle began to form, which then rose up into a watery column, taking the pitcher with it.
    • The column rose above his head and wider than his shoulders.
  • Aegar stepped in and disappeared.
  • The column fell to the ground, leaving a large pond in its wake.

Grabbing an Egg

  • Aegar emerged from the pond with a sheepish look.
  • He pulled Pliny aside and wispered in his ear: Pliny, where’s your bag of holding? I need one.”
    • Pliny: “One what?”
    • Aegar: “A white dragon egg Pliny. For… reasons.”
    • Pliny smirked: “Oh, ‘reasons’. Sure Aegar.” and he handed over one of the white dragon eggs.
  • Aegar turned on his heels and made again for the pool, attempting to salvage as much dignity as he could.

–> –>

Frozen Pliny

  • While Aegar was still in the pond, it began to bubble, and an opaque white mist began to form. It swirled over to and around Pliny, and Pliny was briefly encased in ice.
  • As soon as Pliny began to move, the ice shattered and he was free.

Aegar’s Return

  • Aegar stepped out of the pool to the applause of his teammates.

Zoyana’s tree

  • As the Sword Coast approached, Zoyana left the castle as a giant eagle and returned with a small redwoodcone, no more than an inch across.
  • Following the memory from Aegar’s dream, she dug a small hole beside Aegar’s pond on the far side form the castle gate.
  • Over the following days, she cast Plant Growth in the area, enriching the land and envigorating the growth the sapling.

Dreams and nightmares

  • The dreams the party had been having of dragons and masks continued. And morphed.
  • Aegar continued to notice the blue, scaly claws of the one wearing the blue dragon mask. And the empty space, and only four figures chanted (red, blue, green, white) and then that the dragon had four heads (red, blue, green, white).
    • But also, Aegar often saw his schools flourishing… then being burned/frozen/broken by dragons of various types. Children drug off to slavery/slaughter.
  • Zoyana’s eyes each time locked on the man in the red mask, Severin, the leader, who was there when her village was lost. And then the chanting of the five dragon-masked figures, each a different color (red, black, blue, green, white) before the five-headed dragon emerged, each head a different color (red, black, blue, green, white).
    • But also, Zoyana saw forests burning/withering/shattering under the breaths fo various dragons. And herself falling off a waterfall into endless mist.
  • Pliny saw something familiar about the one in the background wearing the green dragon mask, some nights tickling his memories mor than others, before the chanting of the five dragon-masked figures, each a different color (red, black, blue, green, white) led to the five-headed dragon emerging, each head a different color (red, black, blue, green, white).
    • But also, Pliny saw people screaming in the streets, running from the roars of dragons of all colors. Then dying in horrific billows of smoke, mist, and fire.

Flying Castle - Update in Waterdeep

  • Upon arriving in Waterdeep, the party learned some hard lessons about the cost of home ownership:
  • It requires maintenance and upkeep. It needs magical energy to fuel itself. The rough estimate to maintaining such a wonderful castle:
    • Unskilled labor (25): 25 GP per day
    • Skilled artisans and laborers: 75 GP a day
    • Several wizards to channel magical energy, use cold spells to keep the ice from melting, and perform other wizardly odd-jobs: 150 GP per day.
  • Plus, it takes magical energy required to move the castle: 10 GP worth of magical items per mile of travel?
  • The party parked castle in Waterdeep for repairs.
  • <The Castle is now a stronghold. Details TBD>

Second Council of Waterdeep

  • This time, the party was ushered straight into a Small Council meeting in the same smaller chamber, to a group of roughly similar makeup and size (about 20). This included

    • Lord Dagult Neverember, the Open Lord of Waterdeep that they had met briefly at their reunion with Leosin during their first visit to Waterdeep
    • Marshal Ulder Ravengard, Marshal of the Flaming Fist and Duke of Baldur’s Gate, who’s respect the party gained when dealing with the Murkwater Maniac
    • Sir Isteval, former Dragon Knight of Cormyr, now representing Daggerford, who Aegar had met while searching for a magic shop. His cane made of a dragon femur unmistakable.
    • Ontharr Frume, representing the Order of the Gauntlet, who they befriended in Elturel
    • King Melandrach, King of the elves of the Misty Forest, who Pliny had met previously via his father and grandfather.
    • Prince Alagarthas, of the elves of the Misty Forest, who Pliny had met previously.
    • And many they had met only at the previous Council of Waterdeep:
      • Taern Hornblade, Former High Mage of Silverymoon
      • Lord Dauner Ilzimmer, Lord Warder of Amphail
      • Ambassador Connerad Brawnanvil, envoy from Mithral Hall, representing the dwarves of the North
      • Remallia Haventree, representing the Harpers
      • Declan Winterhound, representing the Emerald Enclave
      • A Masked Lord of Waterdeep, who’s identity was not revealed
      • Lady Dala Silmerhelve, speaking for House Silmerhelve of Waterdeep
      • Rian Nightshade, of unclear affiliation

Updating the Council

  • The party and Maccath updated the council about the Cult of the Dragon’s activities, and detailed their experience with:
    • Finding Maccath
    • The Draakhorn (as above, though Maccath’s prior musings about the effect on metallic dragons did not come up).
    • What they knew of the Cult’s process in getting loot from across the Sword Coast to Skyreach Castle, Skyreach Castle’s flight to Oyaviggaton, and the murder of Talis, Glazhael, the giants and the others by Aurathator.
    • The epic battle between Aurathator, the Old White Death and the Looting Luters, culminating in the killing shot by Pliny Melvin Pan, Dragonslayer.
    • That Maccath considered the Looting Luters the lords of Skyreach Castle by Right of Conquest.
    • The attack by Umphrey the red dragon rider and his squad of wyvern riding Cultists. (And Pliny the Dragonslayer’s second dragon-killing shot.)
    • Severin’s message.

Updates and Discussion from the Council:

<Players tasked with taking notes for things like these 😬>

Call for Aid (highlights)

  • During the Council of Waterdeep, Declan Winterhound spoke of the draconic incursions in the Misty Forest.
  • King Melandrach minimized the concerns, considering the minor Cult nuisances at best.
  • Later, during a break, Declan Winterhound and Prince Alagarthas pulled the party aside to reinforce what Declan had shared to the Council.
    • There was definitely more to the attacks in the Misty Forest, though King Melandrach was too proud and trusting of his elves to see it. Minor raids do not include green dragons.
    • They shared that the Emerald Enclave’s agents had been working with the support of Prince Alagarthas to prevent a new round of attacks.
    • With his agents already scattered throughout the Misty Forest, Declan wanted the adventurers to travel to one of the few dragon-raided settlements left standing in the aftermath—a village called Altand.
    • If Declan’s belief that the mysterious master of the green dragon was one of the Cult’s wyrmspeakers is true, the survivors of Altand might know something that would help find him, and experience says that if found, they would need to be dealt with quickly.

The Misty Forest

  • The Misty Forest was a a vast woodland concealed by thick mist and rain.
  • Enormous spruce trees dominated the northern end of the forest where Altand wass found.
  • The mist in the forest was omnipresent. Though it could be ignored inside most buildings, all outdoor areas of the forest were lightly obscured by the waxing and waning banks of fog.

Altand

  • Altand was primarily a wood elf settlement, blending almost seamlessly into the forest around it.
  • The village existed on two levels, with a few structures built on the ground around an ancient monument to an elven ranger.
  • Residences and the village temple were built into the upper boughs of the forest. The elves strung rope bridges between these sites and construct circular walkways around the trees.
  • Pulley-operated platforms connected the two levels of the village, and provided an excellent defense against the orcs that occasionally entered the forest as an alternative to raiding human settlements along the Trade Way.
    • However, those defenses proved a deathtrap against the flying green dragon, leaving many elves unable to reach the ground quickly enough to escape.
  • When the party arrived, they discussed the attack with the villagers and were directed to Galin, the Warden of the district at his residence in the upper boughs of the village.

Survivors’ Tales

  • Between the discussion at the Council of Waterdeep and brief discussions upon arrival at Altand, the party gathered:
    • Of the three hundred residents of the village, more than half survived the raid.
      • This was a different outcome than at other raided settlements, where the dragon hunted and killed the elves to the last adult and child.
    • Many of the residents of Altand were on the ground when the attack came.
      • Of the elves in the upper level of the village, many died of the dragon’s poisonous breath while waiting to descend, or fell to their deaths as bridges and walkways collapsed under the weight of panic.
    • Most survivors fled and saw little of what ensued.
      • The dragon swooped down and attacked on the ground first. Nearly half of the village’s victims died during that first assault.
    • Humans in the regalia of the Cult of the Dragon followed the dragon, killing all those they found. The village’s priest stepped out to lead others in fighting the dragon, but the beast swallowed him whole.
    • Some survivors claimed to have seen a cultist riding atop the dragon. Most of those referred to the dragon rider as human, like the other cultists. However, a few people reported that the figure moved with the grace of an elf.
    • With the priest dead, the village’s warden, Galin, had become the leader of Altand. Though he was in the thick of the fight, he survived unscathed, and has been a potent force for rallying the survivors.
      • The folk of the village described him as suffering from the weight of his new leadership role and the deaths of more than a hundred villagers—including his own wife.
    • The attack lasted only a short while, then the dragon unexpectedly retreated.
    • The cultists followed, but as they fled, they took nothing of value from the village.
      • This was a stark contrast to the dragon’s other raids, which were focused on capturing treasure.

Galin, the Warden

  • Stepping into a modest dwelling suspended among iron-strong boughs, the party entered a cozy sitting room.
  • A slim elf sat at a desk, standing to greet them with a forced smile as a raven perched in a nearby cage cawed hideously.
    • “Welcome to our village. How can I be of service?”
  • At first, Galin answers the party’s questions by echoing what the other survivors had shared.
  • He claimed to have not seen the dragon rider, dismissing such reports as the result of fear and chaos during the raid. But the party sensed that the elf warden is withholding information.
  • Ultimately, the party convinced Galin to come clean and share the truth:
    • He confessed that after seeing his wife killed, he found himself face to face with mask-wearing leader of the raiders in the thick of battle and begged for his life, offering anything in return.
  • The leader took the warden up on his offer, agreeing to spare Galin and leave Altand intact in exchange for information on other settlements that would become the targets of the Cult’s next round of raids. They had met several times outside the village since the raid.
  • Galin did not know the identity of the mask-wearing leader, or the location of their base. However, from the meeting place, he had watched the dragon flying off on a course due southeast and he had noticed that the leader’s clothes and hair were often wet.

Into the Forest

  • The party set off with no fanfair and little planning towards the southeast, on a hunt for the Cult raiders and the green dragon.
  • Through two days of fast travel through dense, fog-filled forest, the party saw signs from a group of humanoids traveling to and then from the village. The signs showed the path, but provided little additional detail.

Fallen Trees

  • On the second day, as the characters traveled through the forest, they heard the crunch of a large tree breaking, followed by a female voice crying out.
  • Ahead, they saw a woman with her leg trapped under a heavy fallen tree. She calls out for help when she sees the party.
  • Aegar stepped forward, and with the “help” of Pliny, attempted to help.
  • It took all their effort to lift the tree, knowing that they put themselves at risk if it shifted against them.
  • But then even as they were close to freeing the woman, the tree began to rise on its own.
  • Two other trees standing nearby shifted back along the ground as the elf stood and smiled, showing no sign of injury.
  • “Heroes at last! How many might fall back in fear at the sight of a stranger in the woods, or think first of their own safety before helping another?”
  • She looked to the party “I grant you my blessing. May your hearts prove true where others fear to tread.”
  • The woman picked flowers from her hair that the party would have sworn were not there a moment ago, then twisted her fingers to weave them into garlands as if by magic.
    • She reached toward each to lay a garland around each of their necks.
      • Aegar, Pliny, and Fang accepted.
      • Zoyana did not.
  • Without a word, she suddenly transformed into an owl and her awakened trees stomped after her into the forest.

Spiders’ Haunt

  • The following day, the party started to notice thin strands of spiderweb, hanging nearly invisible in the misty air.
  • The forest grew darker.
  • The webbing combined with the dense mist of the forest to further obscured visibility and make the terrain more difficult.
  • Throughout the morning, the webbing became thicker and the party started to notice birds and animals trapped within it.
  • After crossing one particularly thick web, the party was attacked.
  • 3 ettercaps attacked with web garrotes, trying to strangle and incapacitate the party.
  • 7 giant spiders used webs to drop into the party’s midst.
  • A fight ensued. The party won, but only after taking a beating.

The session ended with the party licking their wounds and preparing to take a short rest…
