Session 67 - Old White Death (recap)

In this session, our party recapped their time apart, said a final goodbye to Ragvala, joined the Coucil of Waterdeep, and quested north after Maccath the Crimson and the Old White Death.

Time apart

  • Zoyana disappeared, explored, and became a mercenary
  • Fang followed Zoyana
  • Aegar, severely shaken by the black dragon encounter, broke down and then took months to heal at one of his schools.
  • Pliny traveled, sang, and took care of Aegar

Visions

  • About a month before the start of the session, the party each individually started seeing visions of a group of dragon-masked people chanting in a giant room and opening a portal, out of which came a multi-headed dragon.

    • Zoyana’s eyes each time locked on the man in the red mask, who appeared the leader, who was there when her village was lost. And then the chanting of the five dragon-masked figures, each a different color (red, black, blue, green, white) before the five-headed dragon emerged, each head a different color (red, black, blue, green, white).
    • Pliny saw something familiar about the one in the background wearing the green dragon mask, before the chanting of the five dragon-masked figures, each a different color (red, black, blue, green, white) led to the five-headed dragon emerging, each head a different color (red, black, blue, green, white).
    • Aegar noticed the blue, scaly claws of the one wearing the blue dragon mask, even as he saw that one of the places was missing, and only four figures chanted (red, blue, green, white) and then that the dragon had four heads (red, blue, green, white).

A final goodbye to Ragvala

Rokstasha - Skeleton fight

  • Skeletons attacks:

    • The sun has just risen and as each went about their morning routine, a purple-hued magical circle silently appeared behind them.
    • Gold-colored magic symbols and ancient runes rotated and flickered within the magic circle.
    • A second later, the runes and symbols stopped moving: at the center, a short sword emerged with a skeletal hand wrapped around its hilt, followed by an arm, an exposed rib cage, and finally a skull with tiny flashing red beads floating in its eye sockets.
    • The skeleton moved quietly as it positioned its weapon to stab them from behind.
  • Pliny yelled “Not again, motherfucker!”, pulled his rapier, and (Nat 1) whiffed spectacularly.

  • Fights entailed.

  • The broken bones of the skeletons fell to the ground, their skulls still intact.

    • The glowing red bead on the eye sockets of the skull suddenly shifted into a bright blue color.
    • Its jaw animated as a deep, and ancient voice escaped from it. In a slow pace, they heard: “Amazing! Simply Amazing!…”
  • The light on the skull’s eyes vanished as another magical circle appeared on the ground with them in the center.

    • Gold arrow-like symbols manifested within the circle, pointing at them, before a blinding flash of light consumed their whole body and their belongings as they were teleported to an unknown destination.

Reunion

  • The light cleared, and party found themselves in Rokstasha’s palace in the sky.

  • The old adventurer welcomed them to his palace and explained that Ragvala’s funeral would be starting soon.

  • The party got reacquainted briefly before they were escorted to their separate rooms and offered whatever they needed.

    • Pliny asked the staff about Aegar’s adventuring gear (which Pliny was storing for Aegar). By the time he looked, Aegar’s gear was available in his closet.
  • Rokstasha had them dress in their adventuring garb (“Gear up. It’s what he would have wanted.”)

Rokstasha - Ragvala’s funeral

  • The party gathered with Rokstasha and an indeterminate number of others in Rokstasha’s chapel.
  • Sitting on the pews, they looked out and saw dozens of funerals: Nobles in a kings court. Families in a small village. Fae. Metallic dragons. They told tales large and small. A trickster with a heart of gold. A beggar who became a lord. A lord who bequeath his holding to his people. A warrior who slew monsters. A mentor who brought good.

Challenge

  • At the end of the ceremony, Rokstasha turned to the party and held out a large ruby, engraved with a symbol, “I have something for you.”

    • Zoyana took it, but did not understand the Giant script.
    • As she did, Rokstasha winked. “Here you go. You’ll know when you need it.” And then smiled a wicked grin while raising his hand.
  • Rokstasha brought has hand down and said, “But, before you go… Fight! Like your lives depended on it!”, and the room flashed, and was suddenly a gladiatorial arena. The cat-like man’s claws bared.

  • Zoyana attacked first, transforming into a minotaur and taking Rokstasha from his feet.

  • The party fought valiantly.

  • Aegar noticed it’s thumbs were on the wrong side, and then that it’s fingers flexed towards the outside. This was no tabaxi.

  • When spells did not have any effect, the party realized this was a raksasha, a much more dangerous foe. But also that Aegar’s smite did no more damage than normal, and that this was no typical fiend.

  • As the fight neared it’s end, Rokstasha’s face grew serious. He dropped his fighting stance and healed Aegar and Pliny.

  • Something then changed. A hum, a buzz, an energy.

Sounding

  • Aegar’s sword Lady Constance started to glow faintly. As did Pliny’s bow. And they noticed other magic items were glowing faintly too. Especially those with some relation to dragons.

    • The black dragon mask started to drip from the fangs, the drops hissing into mist and smoke when they reached the floor. The eyes flared.
  • Rokstasha: “Well, that was sooner than I expected…” He waived a hand and a portal opened up. “After you…” and he bowed a polite bow.

    • Zoyana, still in minotaur form, charged through. Fang followed. After a brief moment, Aegar and Pliny did too.

The Council of Waterdeep

Leosin’s office

  • The party stumbled through the portal into an office.
  • Leosin was at a desk in the Harper safehouse in Waterdeep, and was in the process of writing to the party to ask them to come.
  • Leosin took them quickly a few blocks away to a meeting already in progress.

The Open Council Meeting:

  • The building Leosin took them to included a grand meeting hall. The meeting was contentious.

    • Nobles lined the upper gallery watching.
    • A table below housed a few dozen. Many of whom the party recognized.
  • Lord Neverember invited the party to give an update of what they knew of the Cult. Not long in, the party caused a fluster with their disclosures, and Lord Neverember closed the session for a private update with a much smaller group.

The Closed Council Meeting:

  • In a smaller chamber, the party gave their update to a group of about 20. This included

    • Lord Dagult Neverember, the Open Lord of Waterdeep that they had met briefly at their reunion with Leosin during their first visit to Waterdeep

    • Marshal Ulder Ravengard, Marshal of the Flaming Fist and Duke of Baldur’s Gate, who’s respect the party gained when dealing with the Murkwater Maniac

    • Sir Isteval, former Dragon Knight of Cormyr, now representing Daggerford, who Aegar had met while searching for a magic shop. His cane made of a dragon femur unmistakable.

    • Ontharr Frume, representing the Order of the Gauntlet, who they befriended in Elturel

    • King Melandrach, King of the elves of the Misty Forest, who Pliny had met previously via his father and grandfather.

    • And many they had not met previously:

      • Taern Hornblade, Former High Mage of Silverymoon
      • Lord Dauner Ilzimmer, Lord Warder of Amphail
      • Ambassador Connerad Brawnanvil, envoy from Mithral Hall, representing the dwarves of the North
      • Remallia Haventree, representing the Harpers
      • Declan Winterhound, representing the Emerald Enclave
      • A Masked Lord of Waterdeep, who’s identity was not revealed
      • Lady Dala Silmerhelve, speaking for House Silmerhelve of Waterdeep
      • Rian Nightshade, of unclear affiliation
  • Lady Dala Silmerhelve gave a pertinent update:

    • “The disturbance that’s been sensed across the Sword Coast is the Draakhorn - an ancient device whose sounding alerts dragons across Faerun that great events are unfolding. It’s impossible to say what the sounding means, but the dragons hear it clearly and will eventually answer its call.”
    • The Sea of Moving Ice was the last known location of the Draakhorn. No one can pin point its present location from the sound, or even verify with certainty that the relic is still in the northern sea, but the search must start there. And here’s why:
    • “The one person who could tell us more is a tiefling wizard called Maccath the Crimson. No one alive knows more about the Draakhorn than her, but the Arcane Brotherhood, of which she is also a member, hasn’t seen her for three years. She was investigating the Sea of Moving Ice when she disappeared.”
    • Maccath the Crimson was a one of the Arcane Brotherhood’s most notable dragon experts, and had recently gone north into the rang of the White Dragon Arauthator, known as Old White Death to investigate rumors related to the Draakhorn.
    • Maccath reported her progress to the Hosttower by way of sending spells. Her last report spoke of seeing Ice Hunters paddling their sealskin boats toward a huge iceberg, floating upon a cloud, with spires that looked like towers. She had intended to follow the Ice Hunters and investigate the iceberg. After that, no more reports came.
    • Attempts to find Maccath using scrying and other magical means located only her ship, adrift and heavily damaged. Some of the ship’s crew were seen dead, but no sign of the tiefling sorcerer was ever found. However, the lair of a dragon as powerful as Arauthator is no doubt protected against scrying magic. If Maccath is alive, in addition to the lore she can share regarding the Draakhorn, the Arcane Brotherhood would be most grateful to get her back.
  • Remallia Haventree:

    • Dissension in the ranks of the Cult of the Dragon (likely due to the work of the Looting Luters, nice job), with the majority of the hoard they had been collecting having apparently gone missing, as well as Talis the White (2nd among the white Cultists)
    • She also gave quite the outburst at one point, in contrast to her otherwise quiet and observant manner, her voice echoing through the council chamber:
      • “Enough of this bickering and delay! Arthagast’s murder should be a rallying cry, a call to arms against the Cult of the Dragon that threatens us all. Our cities, our homes are under siege, and yet we waste time on trivialities. The Cult doesn’t care about our factions or our titles; they care about destruction and chaos. We can’t afford to wait while they amass power. Honor Arthagast’s memory with action, not words. The longer we hesitate, the closer they come to achieving their nightmarish goals. Are we leaders, or are we puppets dancing to the cult’s tune? Unity. Action.”
  • Declan Winterhound:

    • “I must reiterate that this information is sensitive and must not leave the room: we’ve had a sighting of Skyreach Castle, flying North…”
  • Rian Nightshade:

    • “We discovered that the White Dragon Mask had been stolen, but recovered by Varram the White. Some of you may have heard about some nasty business at the Cassalanter Villa. Nobles murdered in the night, investigation determined magical Silence may have played a role. Well the thieves stole a chest. In that chest was the stolen white dragon mask. But it appears that Varram has re-acquired it.”

Plan

  • Council of Waterdeep plan: Looting Luters to go north to investigate, find Maccath, and report back.

  • Looting Luters plan: bring back a white dragon for Aegar

The North

Traveling

  • No sooner had the plan been proposed, than Leosin ushered them out of the chamber to get their journey started (“When you get the answer you want, leave. Otherwise they might changed their minds.”)

  • The next thing they knew, they were aboard the Frostskimmr, captained by a human male known as Lerustah Half-face.

    • The right half of his face was left a scarred ruin from severe frostbite suffered years ago on the Sea of Moving Ice. He kept a leather hood drawn across his face most of the time, both for warmth and so as not to frighten children. Lerustah was a brave explorer and a skilled sailor.
    • Frostskimmr was a light longship with a shallow draft, driven by a single sail or by oars when necessary. The combination of wind and oar power was needed for picking a course through close-packed ice. The ship was open to the air, but the crew rigged sailcloth shelters across the deck to keep away the wind and sleet and hold in some warmth.
    • Despite the ship’s length of nearly sixty feet, it is still light enough to be lifted by its forty crew members if it became hemmed in by ice, which the party learned as they moved North.
  • A combination of luck and skill (and short session time) kept them from being disturbed.

    • Though at one point, the tentacles of a giant octopus slid along the hull before the beast disappeared in the depths.
    • And at another, they spied a polar bear in the distance, making a meal of recent prey.

Oyaviggaton Sighted.

  • As the characters’ objective came into view, with the flattened expanse at one end rising to jagged peaks at the other, there was no mistaking the silhouette of the massive iceberg as matching the description given by Maccath the Crimson.
  • Arauthator’s iceberg lair rose from the sea to form a floating island. The portion of the berg above the water appeared roughly triangular, with rounded corners. The plateau portion of the iceberg rose more than a hundred feet above the water, and the jagged ice peaks add another two hundred feet above that.
  • Off in the distance were spires that might have been castle towers rather than ice peaks.

Ice Hunters

  • The party met some ice hunters who live on the iceberg
  • From their leader, Bonecarver, the party learned much about the iceberg and castle.
    • The iceberg has been one of Arauthator’s homes, and the Ice Hunters are forced to serve. If they left, they would be hunted down to the last and eaten.
    • The castle has only been there for a few months. It flew in one day and hovered above. It landed on the island with a great thunder and cracking of ice.
    • There was a great fight between the white dragons, and the castle had been quiet since.
    • She mapped out a rough description of the castle and explained what she knew about the caves around it, including mentioning the “horned lady” who had been on the island before the crash.

Skyreach Castle

  • The party approached under cover.
    • The front gates of the castle were left wide open.
    • Atop the gate arch was the body of the woman, missing arms beyond the elbow, crucified and frozen.
  • They then curled around, looking for another, more circumspect, entrance.
    • Which they found in the form of an ice cave in a crevasse.
    • From what Bonecarver had said, the crevasse looked like the line where the iceberg under the castle crashed into the larger iceberg below.

Ice caves

  • The party approached and entered the cave cautiously.
  • Up ahead, the tunnel split, with a path to the left rising up and a path to the right curving down.
  • Moving to the right, the tunnel split again, with the right passage opening into a larger room.
  • Before they had a choice, the party was spotted by an ice troll.

Ice Trolls

  • There were ice trolls.
  • Then there were dead ice trolls.

The library

  • Once the ice trolls were dead, the party retreated to investigate the open room.
  • Atop 3 white dragon eggs were 3 ice toads, and behind them bookcases and a desk, illuminated by a single candle.
  • At the desk sat a red tiefling: Maccath the Crimson
  • The party killed the toads, took the eggs, and headed up to hunt the dragon with Maccath the Crimson on their heels.

Maccath the Crimson

  • The conversation was friendly & cordial.
  • Maccath was pretty clear that she didn’t think the party could take Arauthator (“may have tried, all have failed”)
  • When the draakhorn sounded, Arauthator bristled and ordered everyone off Oyaviggaton, which Talis and the others did not like. So Arauthator killed Glazhael, Talis and all the others as a warning.
  • Regardless, Maccath shared that she won’t leave without her library (of many bookshelves).
  • At some point, Maccath snapped at Zoyana: “Can you fly this castle?!”

Exploring the Castle

  • Remains of a white dragon in the main landing.
    • Failed attempt to recover scales during the quick dash and search.
  • Bodies of ogres (dozens), stone Giants (several), and guard drakes.
  • Empty rooms, and empty castle. And Maccath the Crimson

Arauthator, Old White Death

  • Just before the fight, they heard as rasping crunch as brittle scales slid across one another. Scritch, scritch, scritch. Alternating with the silence that comes with fresh snow.
  • A blast of icy dragon breath.
  • Spells. Attacks. Grapples. Elementals. Arrows.
  • Easy dragon. No danger. Pliny and Maccath hiding inside the keep.
  • And with a final wink, Pliny let loose with an arrow that struck home.

The session ended with the dragon dead, in the air, beginning to fall…

Loot

  • 3 white dragon eggs
