Dragon’s Lullaby (Instrument of the Bards – Mac-Fuirmidh Cittern)

Wondrous Item (requires attunement by a bard)

The Dragon’s Lullaby is pure white in color and appears as if its components are made from pearls. A cloud like design is engraved on the instrument’s body, filled in light blue color, and outlined in black. When the instrument is used to cast a spell, tiny pink flower petals swirl around the caster’s body and are then blown away by a harmless gust of wind. The petals’ movement matches the tempo of the music being played from the Cittern.

Due to its magical nature, the cittern is unbreakable and while in possession of the instrument, the bearer feels fortunate and optimistic about what the future holds. The bearer can use an action to play the instrument and expend Sorcery Points to cast one of its spells. The spells use the bearer’s spellcasting ability and spell save DC.

Features

  • Butterflies and other harmless creature frolic in the item’s presence.
  • It glows with a pale radiance in moonlight, shedding dim light in a 5’ radius.
  • A creature that attempts to play the instrument without being attuned to it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 2d4 psychic damage.
  • When the bearer uses the instrument to cast a spell that causes targets to become charmed on a failed save, the targets have disadvantage on the saving throw. This effect applies whether the bearer is using the instrument as the source of the spell or as a spellcasting focus.
  • Once attuned, at the end of each long rest, the cittern provides the bearer with Sorcery Points as if the bearer’s Bard levels were Sorcerer levels (if the bearer has Sorcerer levels, the Sorcery Point pools combine). For characters with 2 or more Bard + Sorcerer levels, that amounts to 1 Sorcery Point per Bard level, refreshed at each long rest.
  • The bearer can use Sorcery Points and the cittern to cast spells from the following list (using the Sorcerer’s conversion table to Create Spell Slots). The Sorcery Points can be used directly, and do not need to be first converted into Spell Slots.
