Church of Ilmater

The Church of Ilmater is the primary religious organization dedicated to the worship and service of Ilmater, the Crying God. The clerics and clergy pledge their lives to providing healing and succor to all in need, whatever the cost to themselves. Misunderstood and scorned by those hard of heart, the Ilmatari are yet loved and relied upon by multitudes of common folk, and at several points in history the church has had the widest and most faithful following in all Faerûn.

Tenets:

All injustice should be challenged, and the victims aided.
If one casts aside wealth and luxury, Ilmater will provide.
Innocent life is sacred.
Suffering to preserve life is holy.
Forgiveness is holy.
A meaningful death is holy.

Commandments:

I. Give all you can to the poor, and place others before yourself.
II. Heal the wounded, treat the sick, comfort the dying.
III. Protect the weak, defend the innocent, emancipate the oppressed.
IV. Resist the tyrant, the despot and the persecutor.
V. Take the burdens and pains of others as your own in their place.
VI. Forgive your enemy that repents.

Senior clerics and priests of Ilmater are known as some of the best healers on Abeir-Toril. They operate the greatest number of the largest and best quality infirmaries and leper sanctuaries of any church. All Ilmatari are trained from initiation in the skills of healing and herbalism, learning to recognize and treat every injury and disease possible. Many priests are also able to brew their own potions, some of which are sold to fund other philanthropies.

Many consider it a great wrong to harm an Ilmatari, as they help ease suffering of all kinds. Even orcs and the goblinoid races hold them in esteem for ministering to their fallen people as well as other races after a battle.
